STRATOSPHERIC Winter Constellations

This is the STRATOSPHERIC winter constellations, that is, viewed from the Air-bus 11-km above sea level. The Air-bus which took off Incheon was flying over the Pacific before landing at San Francisco in one and half hours. It was taken while new day's dawning. It was expected that the Orionids would light up the sky, but I could hardly see any.

Orion, Canis', Gemini, Taurus and another winter constellations alongside with the Pleiades can be seen in the sky. Note that some bright stars of the constellations Canis Major and Orion are seen reflected on the wing of the airplane. Sirius as well as the navigation light at the tip of the wing is very bright and is making flares.

The following photograph was made of 110 fifteen second exposures using a Canon t2i. A 17-40L Canon lens at 17 mm was used. Each exposure was taken at f/5.0 at ISO 400. The individual exposures were stacked using StarstaX. The star barn is a central Pennsylvania landmark located in Middletown. A subtle bank of fog rolled in during the last few exposures adding a soft glow above the pond.

This image has been aquired with the Zeiss 1.23 meter telescope at Calar Alto Observatory (Spain). It is a 28-hour exposure with broadband RGB and narroband H-alpha filters.

The "Pic du Midi" Observatory (in the Pyrénées, south west of France) will be paint Pink during 3 days.
The purpose is to mobilize about breast cancer research and treatment and to celebrate the future "international starry night reserve" to be set up locally to preserve the night sky.
World Known light Artist Yann Kersalé (aik #at# ykersale.com) has provided his artistic contribution for the operation. Yann has already illuminated lot of buildings including "Grand palais" in Paris.

On her own side, Martine (aka MsEclipse,Amateur Astronomer in mission on site during the event ) courageously fighted 3 times breast cancer. She fully supports this operation.

Sharpless 171
Sharpless 171, is a star-forming region some 3,000 light-years away in the royal constellation Cepheus.
It spans about 20 light-years across the nebula's bright central region.
It shows glow of emission from atomic gas using narrowband filters.
Powering the nebular glow are the young, hot stars of a newly formed cluster, Berkeley 59.
