A quick video of a jet crossing the Sun along with Venus. I thought the contrails were especially awesome.

Ingress Interior. The full disk of Venus appears on the Sun.

A lucky shot from Zürich

Post by mlowry » Wed Jun 06, 2012 7:12 am

When I woke up at 5am and looked toward the Eastern horizon, I was disappointed to see nothing but clouds. However, around 6am, (4:00 UTC), the clouds began to thin. By a stroke of luck, a large gap in the clouds passed overhead and provided an almost entirely unobstructed view of the sun for about 15 minutes. I had everything set up, so I was able to get a few good shots. I’m quite pleased with this one.

I captured this image using a Nikon D800 with a Zoom-Nikkor 70-200 ƒ2.8 VR lens, a TC-17E II teleconverter, and three neutral density filters (B+W 1000X, Hoya ND x8, and Hoya ND x4). I used three filters because I wasn’t thinking clearly, and had the aperture wide open. :D

The sky was not as hazy as expected that would allow for naked eye viewing of the transit at sunrise. There were also clouds intervening.
Despite low altitude and strong turbulence the aureole was captured during egress.

Lunch-time, Fenwick School, Oamaru, North Otago, South Island, New Zealand.
Telescope free with subscription to Australian Geographic, tripod a music stand, other items found in shed, gaffer-tape...
Image darkened slightly with Photoshop to show Venus more clearly - point-and-shoot digital camera.

It was very unlucky here in Pune,India with clouds all over the sky and raining since morning. I am feeling so disapoointed that we missed a lifetime chance to see Venus transit. :(

This is a gallery of Venus transit images taken from Mooresville, NC, on 120605 @ 1900EDT. I used a hand-held Lumix FZ100 with a solar filter hand-held over the lens. Note the sunpot systems.

Very fortunate to have experienced the complete transit in 2004 from start to finish and to have yet another opportunity to experience the 2012 event as well. For the latter, we were privy locally to the final two hours of the transit and which included a stunning sunrise with the transit already in progress.

With the exception of one low-level cloud at the direction of the rising sun, the sky was pristine with very good transparency and seeing (similar to 2004).

See you in 2117 for the next one! :D
