Wow! What an amazing image and even more so seen when zooming through the "At a full resolution" link.
It would be a long climb up to get out of that crater if you fell down it!

iamlucky13 - You seem to forget. The people did not put him in jail/house arrest. It was the church authorities.
Do not blame the masses for the failures of those in control. At this time in mankinds evolution education in the sciences could only come about with the approval of those in power. It is a far cry from today's world where everyone in this country can get a minimum education, including the sciences.

What country do you live in? In my country (the U.S.) an increasingly large percentage of the population is grossly undereducated in the sciences, and fewer and fewer children are receiving what could even be called a minimum education. A significant percentage don't know that the Earth travels around the Sun. And of course, "those in power" deprecate science whenever it suits their politics. Not much is different today in the U.S. than in 17th century Italy.BruceBWilliams wrote:iamlucky13 - You seem to forget. The people did not put him in jail/house arrest. I wonder whether this goes some way towards explaining the frequent reports of 'transient lunar phenomena' in Aristarchus. These have often taken the form of bright white flashes.
Looking at the photograph, there is at least one quite large area of brilliant white excavated material which, given a certain solar colongitude and libration, might cause a flash to be observed by a telescopic observer.
