Mars from this morning (Feb.2nd) under favourable conditions and now approaximately one month from opposition. Here from the top Polar regions are Utopia, Cebrenia (Viking2 Lander) Mid area Syrtis Major (Dark area) and Elysium region with Oragraphic clouds and below Hellas and Mare Tyrrhenum region.

Equipment: LX200ACF 12 in. OTA, F30, CGE mount, PGR Flea3 Ccd, TeleVue 3x barlows, Astronomik Ir, RGB filter set.

This is a 10 image mosaic of the area from the Cone Nebula to the Rosette Nebula. I chose the name for the image as it looks like a waterfall of flames running from the Cone to the Rosette. I have some little time now, so I'll start commenting...

Clemens Konieczka, that's a fascinating and beautiful painting of an alien world. Thanks!

Jose Francisco Hernandez, I like how you bring out the colors in Comet 2009 P1. Those two tails are fascinating!

Robert Gendler is one of my heroes, and I'm always glad to see his images here. He is a master when it comes to processing images, so he has been allowed to process many images taken with the Hubble Telescope. Here he has processed an image taken an ESO image taken with the Subaru Telescope. The galaxy in the image, NGC 1232, is so interesting. You can tell that it is a large galaxy from the fact that it has a large yellow bulge - note how far the yellow population extends - and it has got a very intricate, very regular spiral structure. Note all the pink emission nebulae. Like most large spiral galaxies, it is interacting with at least one smaller galaxy that helps "wind it up".

ESO has another image here, the picture of NGC 3324, the Gabriela Mistral nebula, here called "A Pocket of Star Formation". It is a fascinating part of the sky and a very fine image.

Efrain Morales, that is a very fine Mars image indeed. It is amazing what talented and dedicated amateurs can do nowadays.

And talk about amazing... Lynn Hillborn, that's fantastic! Look at that comet coma, and look at that globular! Incredible! Look at those orange red giant stars and asymtotic giant branch stars, and look at those blue horizontal branch stars!

Craig and Tammy Temple, thank you for that fine image of IC443 - The Jellyfish Nebula in "modified" HST. To me the Jellyfish looks a bit like canine alien wearing a helmet - perhaps he is a warrior from Star Wars?

Wolgang Promper, I like your M42 image. It looks a bit like a fantastic cosmic flower, with red petals, a blue-white interior and brilliantly white stamens and a white pistil!

Patrick Hochleitner and Dieter Beer, that's a fine image of Atik, Omicron Persei, and surrounding dark and bright nebulosity. What a fascinating alien skyscape!

Scott Tucker, I like your image of Jones-Emberson 1. The shape of this nebula is interesting, both twisted and very regular. I like the intense and the subtle colors of the fluorescing gases, and the not-so-subtle electric blue color of the super-hot central star!

NGC 2403 is a very pretty galaxy, and Bernard Miller, you have done it full justice!

Amirreza Kamkar, I like your Rosette Nebula widefield image. You have brought out the brightness of the Rosette Nebula and the faintness of other famous nebulae in the vicinity, particularly the Cone Nebula and the Christmas Tree Cluster.

I have to comment on Alistair Symon's Rosette Firefalls image here. Alistair Symon has brought out the fantastic shapes of the emission nebulosity in this part of the sky. What amazing long red tendrils you've brought out for us, Alistair! And the Cone Nebula and the Christmas Tree Cluster sure are bright. And then there is that isolated blue reflection nebula whose designation I can never remember, but I'm sure it has got an IC number! All in all, Alistair, I think your image looks like a striking and intricate painting of splendid abstract art!

And now I have no more time, so I will have to return to this thread later on.

Okay, I'll get back to where I was when I left off.

Alain Origné, I'm totally fascinated by your image, but I don't really understand it. "Refraction, Pic of Canigou, and the Notre Dame de la Garde" - where is the refraction? In the sky? I don't know where it is, but I can see that the sky looks fantastic. All magenta and cerise, with tones of apricot, and then there are those dark gray clouds that look like they had been painted with broad brush strokes by an artist with Indian ink. And those mountains on the other side of the sea(?) looks like a mirage. Amazing!

Günter Kerschhuber, your image looks as if a swimming creature of the cosmic sea had captured a galaxy in its yarn and carried it with it!

The image produced by NASA, ESA, Hubblesite and others and showing that incredible lensed galaxy is of course just fantastic. I think, however, that I read a caption somewhere that I don't agree with - I think it said that distant galaxies like the elongated lensed one are typically bursting with star formation, whereas nearby galaxies are typically "red and dead". But many nearby galaxies are forming a lot of stars. It is true, however, that large clusters of yellow ellipticals are the best "foreground lenses", and it is true, too, that star formation peaked in the universe several billion years ago. Well, it is a splendid image, that much is certain!

NASA and ESA have also produced a magnificent image of nearby spiral NGC 1073. But I have already commented on that image elsewhere on these boards.

Mike Putnam, I like your glory in the clouds! Your cloudscape looks slightly unreal in itself, and that glory is just so totally unlikely! (But nice!)

Rich Hammar, I've said it before, I really like your picture of Albireo! I particularly like the softness and subtleness of the colors of the two components, which strikes me as so true to life.

Vedran Matica, as I scroll down your image, the stars seems to move and wheel around! Goodness! I like your nodding donkey, too, which brings movement of another sort to your image. I must say that I have rarely seen so much movement in a still as I have seen in your image!

Ezequiel Bellocchio, thanks for taking us to the Zoo of the Rosette!

Luc Perrot, your two images of Sky of the Southern Hemisphere/Réunion Island are fantastic. Splendid! And I love the fact that you have included not only an annotated image, but an annotated image that is so richly - well, so richly annotated!

Yuriy Toropin, that really and truly looks like a bogeyman! And that sickly yellow nebula behind him is the Eye of Sauron, perhaps?

Finally, avdhoeven, I'm not the best person to be commenting on Moon images. But even I can see that your Moon images are really very, very fine!
