APOD: January Aurora Over Norway (2012 Jan 24)

Post by APOD Robot » Tue Jan 24, 2012 5:06 am

Image January Aurora Over Norway

Explanation: What's that in the sky? An aurora. A large coronal mass ejection occurred on our Sun five days ago, throwing a cloud of fast moving electrons, protons, and ions toward the Earth. Although most of this cloud passed above the Earth, some of it impacted our Earth's magnetosphere and resulted in spectacular auroras being seen at high northern latitudes. Pictured above is a particularly photogenic auroral corona captured last night above Grotfjord, Norway. To some, this shimmering green glow of recombining atmospheric oxygen might appear as a large eagle, but feel free to share what it looks like to you. This round of solar activity is not yet over -- a new and even more powerful solar flare occurred yesterday that might provide more amazing aurora as soon as tonight.

This looks like a preliminary act to the really 'big show' to come later this year and into 2013 when our nearest star really kicks up her heals. It ought to be something to behold, perhaps even transformational! Not a thing to fear, but to embrace.

Today’s APOD has an abundance of good links which, in turn, lead to even more great aurora images. The video at http://vimeo.com/21294655 is especially worth a viewing.

The crest of the eagle's head also looks like a slender lion leaping from left to right

Oh, WOW! What a stunning picture! And it seems even more remarkable that such a gorgeous view should have been taken only last night . . how lucky we are to be able to see it so soon. Being quite a keen photographer myself, I can really appreciate the thrill that this photographer must have felt, knowing he had captured such a wonderful view of such an amazing phenomenon. A great composition, with those dramatic mountains beneath the ethereal glow. Beautifully done!

. . . and the rockets red glare/the bombs bursting in air . . . Kinda patriotic, ain't it? Three smilies for the red, white and blue!

The largest eagle that ever lived was the Haast's Eagle. Below is an image of one attacking the giant moa, which grew to 7feet tall. They also sometimes ate the Maori who hunted the moa to extinction.
In some countries, people live amongst tigers and leopards, but you can build fences to keep them out. Imagine living amongst eagles big enough to swoop down and pluck a six-foot man from the street and take off with him. They would probably also like sheep.

Why doesn't he cloud of ions ejected by the Sun neutralise itself in its way towards Earth? It has electrons and protons in it. So they can form neutral atoms, don't you think?

It looks like an American Indian, on the top part. The face is on the left with the feathered headdress flowing out to the right. :ssmile:

I agree, it looks more like an American Indian or even only a face that is moving really fast
