Plum cake, Darth Vader shoes and an apricot-colored skirt
Plum cake, Darth Vader shoes and an apricot-colored skirt
Okay, I'm on vacation. In a little over a week I'll stop posting so much here.
But I have to tell you about my plum cake, my Darth Vader shoes and socks and my apricot-colored skirt.
Two days ago I was out cycling in an old and lush part of Malmö, full of rich gardens with many fruit trees. I passed two plum trees which had both dropped a load of plums on the public sidewalk. I helped myself to perhaps twenty plums.
The next day I made plum cake:
Put your oven on 175 degrees Celsius.
Lightly butter a pie dish. I used a small one.
Wash, dry and halve the plums you are going to use and remove their stones. Put them in the pie dish, flat side down. Cover the bottom of the pie dish with plums.
For a small pie, whip one large egg and 3/4 of a deciliter of castor sugar until the mixture is really white. Mix about 3/4 deciliter (or one deciliter) of flour and one teaspoon of baking powder. (Or use self-raising flour.) Add the flower to the egg and sugar and stir until you have a batter. Spread the batter over the plums in the pie dish.
Sprinkle sliced almonds and nibs of white sugar over the batter. Cut thin slices of butter and make a "butter cover" over the pie.
Put the pie in the oven and let it bake until it is ready, which should take about 30 minutes.
This isn't my plum cake, but it should give you some general idea of what you'll get. The fruit is at the bottom of the pie dish and the "sort of sponge cake" is on top. My cake, however, was a lot smaller, flatter and not so wet.
Anyway. I had made my plum cake, and I was going to cycle to a good friend of mine and share the cake with her and her family. It was a warm day, unusually so for this summer in my part of Sweden, and I chose my favorite apricot-colored, flower-patterned skirt. I also wore my nice new white (not blue!) suede shoes.
But I was worried about the weather. It was a humid day, and there might be showers. And I knew that my friend wanted us to go for a not-so-short walk. What would happen to my white suede shoes if there was a terrible shower when we were out walking?
So I also brought a pair of real Darth Vader shoes. Black. As black as they get. Unforgivingly black. There is not a single detail on these shoes that is not black-black.
(And, since I don't like to walk in these shoes without socks, I also brought a pair of Darth Vader socks. Black. Black-black.)
And my friend and I went on our walk. I wore, to be on the safe side, my black Darth Vader shoes, my black Darth Vader socks and my apricot, flower-patterned skirt.
And as I looked down on my skirt and my feet, I felt like Darth Vader striding along in an apricot-colored skirt, I'm not kidding you.
And, as you can imagine, it started raining. It was pouring down. Drops of water were splashing and "bouncing" off the asphalt of the sidewalks we walked on.
What a good thing that I had my black Darth Vader shoes on!
What a good idea that I had my black socks on!
What a... good idea... that I had my apricot, flower-patterned skirt on... Or maybe not.
When we finally came back from our semi-long walk, my favorite, apricot-colored skirt was spattered with wet, tarry, coal-black tiny bits of black asphalt. Don't ask me how it happened. Maybe it was Darth Vader who spattered my skirt. He didn't like the fact that I was out walking looking like him in an apricot-colored skirt!
So my favorite, apricot-colored skirt is ruined, if you ask me!!! Bwaaaah!!!!
But the plum cake was good!

Re: Plaum cake, Darth Vader shoes and an apricot-colored ski
Ann, why would you want to stop posting so much I think your posts are 'plum' good, with or without the tar splatted apricot-colored skirt
About the skirt....if you think it is ruined and are going to throw it out...... first try soaking it in Pine-Sol for a day or two. Then wash it.
A guy that fixes cars told me his wife got tar on her dress and was going to throw it out, as would be normal. He thought of Pine-Sol and tried it and it worked. He said it has kerosene in it and it penetrates the tar. Hey, if you're gonna throw it out... what the heck. Give it a try. I don't know about using it on the Darth Vader Black shoes though.

Thanks for the compliment, beyond!!!!
I don't know if we have Pine-Sol in Sweden, but I guess we have something with kerosene, all the same. Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: Plum cake, Darth Vader shoes and an apricot-colored skir
Ann kind of looks more like a pie. My mom used to make fruit dumplings; and boy were they good.http://czechunderscope.com/culture/czec ... gs/lng/en/

My mother used to make plum dumplings, too, but she wrapped plums in potato dough, and boiled before rolling in toasted bread crumbs. Yum!orin stepanek wrote:Ann kind of looks more like a pie. Ann, your cake/pie seems like a great new idea to use plums. Thank you!
Re: Plum cake, Darth Vader shoes and an apricot-colored skir
Ann, did you ever get the black tarry spots out of your favorite dress?? Or off the Darth Vader Black shoes?

Re: Plum cake, Darth Vader shoes and an apricot-colored skir
Well, I got them out to such an extent that I can wear my skirt again. Good thing there are flowers printed all over the material. With so much color and pattern, a number of small faded mildly bluish spots don't call attention to themselves - not even a large number of them.

Wow. That cake, pie, turnover, whatever one may want to call it sounds really good. May work with other types of fruit as well. Peaches, apricots, etc. Served warm with maybe a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Outstanding. Thanks Ann.
