Restrain (rechannel?) your enthusiasm?

Post by JohnD » Tue Oct 11, 2011 6:47 am

A brief and wholly subjective review of the responses to APODS reveals that about 4 to 1 of them just say "Nice", "Awesome", "wonderful picture!" etc.

No argument with that, but it is so refreshing when someone (See the recent strange sunrise thread) leads with a question that the picture has brought to their mind. Astronomy, or any science, cannot fail to be in awe of what it finds, the complexity and the beauty, but unless it also has questions about those findings then we cannot hope to advance any further in our personal or overall understanding.

I see nothing wrong with giving kudos to the photographer of an awesome picture. Whether a person has a question or not it is always nice to compliment the photographer. Reading the links usually answers most of the questions I may have or sometimes someone beats me to the question I may have. 8-)

John, you are always welcome to lead with a question that the picture has brought to your mind!

Orin, what you said goes for me, too -- you beat me to it! :-D

I did say, that I had no argument with that response.
Many - most! - APODs are beautiful and awesome.
But is APOD merely a pretty picture everyday, like a calendar page of kittens in a shoe?

I hoped to plant the idea that APOD should aim for more than 'just' awesome pictures, to aim stimulate a questioning frame of mind.

John, oh, I thought you were commenting on Asterisk; I didn't realize you want APOD to be something different than what you perceive it to be. APOD is certainly more than awesome pictures to me.

Now you're confusing the issue, owlice.
The only forum for comments on APODs is Asterisk.

To me, APOD is more than that.

But if you're commenting on the conversation here at Asterisk -- and that is actually how I read your opening comment; I think your comment quoted above is what confused the issue -- perhaps you would better "plant the idea that [Asterisk] should aim for more than 'just' awesome pictures" if you were to post in the fashion you are wishing others would adopt? Just a thought.

John, I can see what you're getting at. However, "high five" posts are certainly easy to recognize and scroll past, aren't they?

This thread is beautiful!
