Taken over the 4th of July weekend, the lights of Denver and a small fireworks burst are visible at the left. The Crest House was destroyed by a propane explosion in 1979, leaving only the stone exoskeleton you see here. The left-hand portion, once shrouded in a two-story multi-faceted glass enclosure, is now an observation platform. The Milky Way is visible in the center. The lavender light on the building was added during the initial exposure.

O'Neill's Bridge on the Moon

This so-called ‘bridge’ is an illusion produced by light and shadow in a region close to the western edge of Mare Crisium (Mare Crisium appears as a dull-gray patch on the eastern edge of the Moon as observed visually), which, under a low-power telescope, lulls the viewer into thinking that they are actually observing a ‘natural’ bridge between the physical features on the surface (crater and mountains) in the region. ~ John Moore

Fire acts differently in space than on Earth. Sandra Olson, an aerospace engineer at NASA's Glenn Research Center, demonstrates just how differently in her art. This artwork is comprised of multiple overlays of three separate microgravity flame images. Each image is of flame spread over cellulose paper in a spacecraft ventilation flow in microgravity. The different colors represent different chemical reactions within the flame. The blue areas are caused by chemiluminescence (light produced by a chemical reaction.) The white, yellow and orange regions are due to glowing soot within the flame zone.

Microgravity combustion research at Glenn not only provides insights into spacecraft fire safety, but it has also been used to create award-winning art images. This image won first place in the 2011 Combustion Art Competition, held at the 7th U.S. National Combustion Meeting.

I very much enjoyed the Alpha Scuti field image.

Note above the bright star a loose cluster of predominantly blue stars. This is cluster NGC 6664. According to (an old) paper from 1982, "Intermediate-Band Photometry in the Open Cluster NGC 6664" by Edward G. Schmidt, NGC 6664 is about 46 million years old, so it is younger than the Pleiades. It contains at least two stars of spectral class B3 as well as two or three blue stragglers and a binary Cepheid, EW Scuti. But Art or Chris, I need your help here - according to the paper, the distance modulus is 10.7. What does that mean, and how far away does that make the cluster?

To the right of cluster NGC 6664, at about 10 o'clock, you can see some red nebulosity and a vividly orange-red star. The red star is carbon star RX Scuti.

I like the picture of Barnard's E, also known as Barnard 142 and 143. The reddish star to the left is Gamma Aquilae, a bright giant of spectral class K3II. Teh juxtaposion of the bright reddish star and the dark neula makes me think of fire and ash.
