Should we keep calling ourselves the Milky Way?

Post by emc » Tue Jun 14, 2011 2:58 pm

Our Milky Way being at the center of today’s 2MASS imaged galactic LAN once again gave cause for me to worry. I really think we should seriously consider changing our name from “Milky Way” to something more apt to strike fear in any hostile aliens capable of intergalactic conquest. What are marauding aliens gonna’ think when they learn we call ourselves the “Milky Way”. They’re gonna’ think we’re a bunch of push-overs and probably eat us for breakfast, that’s what!

My kids used to belong to a Gateway Park Pool swim club called the 'Gateway Guppies.'

I'm sure we put the fear of god into teams like the 'Barracuda' and the 'Sharks.'

In Swedish, the Milky Way is called "Vintergatan", "The Street of Winter". (I realize, when I say it in English, that "Vintervägen", "The Road of Winter", would have sounded much better.)

But don't come here, you aliens! We're cold! Cold, cold, cold! We'll freeze your favorite body parts off!
Beware our snowy spiral shape! We'll bite you!

I coached my daughters Fast Pitch Softball teams for ten years. When they were younger they were the T-Birds, Angels and Honey Bears but as they got older we graduated to more sophisticated names like Heartbreakers, Bullets, and Cougars. In the early days, our pitchers struck fear in most every batter!

Say, maybe Ann and Orin are onto something!

Orin, I couldn’t tell if the cat was having fun or frantic... maybe it was both. It was kind of like that with my early Fast Pitch teams.

If you can imagine a very young girl standing in the batter’s box, still not quite sure if her feet are placed correctly, watching an equally young girl in the pitcher’s circle winding up with something akin to Warner Brothers Taz. The first pitch is hurtled about three or four feet over the umpires head and crashes into the backstop with a loud clang... This did not instill confidence in the outcome for either player. Me, I was encouraged that the ball had at least been over the plate.

My personal SA* adventure can be compared to those young girls’ early experiences with each other. I feel like the “Taz” pitching my wild thoughts into SA*’s backstop. Most of the time, folks at those early ball games would just keep quiet too… likely thinking it to be the most polite reaction. I would, however, hear an occasional chuckle from the less inhibited crowd. The batter’s seldom laughed.

As for the original question, I think Crispy Crunch is more evocative, more alliterative, and perhaps more literally true of a galaxy, but more importantly, it's tastier.

Seems like forever ago; but I got the job of coaching my daughters team! I didn't want the job as I had no experience but no body else did either. I talked my neighbor and friend into being my assistant. There were only about 4 girls that showed up for practice each week. They all showed up to play though. You can imagine what a dreadful season we had. My daughter and her friend were the only two that would pitch for us. Neither one threw very fast. Still; The highlight of that season was upsetting the top team in the league. They couldn't hit our (slow) fast pitch! :D The next season They kicked our butts. My daughter went on to play for a very successful fast pitch team;so I guess it paid off. Oh! As faith would have it; My daughter and her friend are now sister in laws. They are married to brothers. And now I go and watch my granddaughter play in a coach pitch girls team. :D

Rob, I think Crispy Crunch might further stimulate an aggressively hostile Alien’s appetite. We need a name that would repel any such Aliens. I mean, it’s bad enough we have our own social cannibals (people that want to do bad things to other people)… I can only imagine what toll there would be to pay hungry angry evil intergalactic aliens.

I liked Clark bars when I was a kid. I imagined they would give me superpowers so I would eat one while swinging on the school playground swing (it was very tall as I remember). I would try to swing high enough to fly… like Superman!

Orin, I was a volunteer also for pretty much the same reason except I started out with some excellent help. There were a lot of talented girls on our teams. I had some very talented coaching help too. After several coaching clinics for me and a little time, we had a respectable team eventually competing in national tournaments.

I’m looking forward to grandkids someday!

For aliens who aren't already lactose intolerant I should think that the
outer shock wave of 'I Love Lucy' shows ought to provide sufficient protection.

What is the significance of “hilit=lucy” in the above viewtopic links? Is that part of some code leak devised by NASA that is intended to reveal the true purpose of the Lucy TV show series to the savy public? Is there more to SA* than meets the eye? Never mind, silly question, of course there is… I don’t think in my remaining lifetime will I ever be able to read all of APOD and SA*… even if I figured out how to utilize that APOD featured astronomical digging device to help.

hilit=lucy is just the search term art used to find the post. When you do a search it'll try to highlight the word you searched for by putting that in the URL. You could put &hilit=anything and it would highlight anything for you.
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.
