Re: Recent Submissions
There are many very beautiful images here. I was particularly moved by Dani Caxete's Big Dipper in a wheat field. The Big Dipper and Polaris are spectacular in the moonlit sky over the wheat field. Although the Big Dipper is an asterism that is flying apart, there is still something "primordial" about this picture. It's no wonder that the Big Dipper has been an incredibly important "star-shape" in the sky, probably for thousands of years, for all peoples living in the Earth's northern hemisphere.

Re: Recent Submissions
The Saturn picture is fascinating, but I don't understand it. Are those black things the rings? Why are they so opaque? Why do we see what looks like the gently curving outline of a planet below the rings(?) and what looks like swirling clouds above them? Why are the clouds so blue?
I would love to get an explanation!

Re: Recent Submissions
Well, I should have checked out the link, of course. Actually I found the explanation a little hard to grasp:owlice wrote:You didn't find the explanation at the link satisfactory?Ann wrote:I would love to get an explanation!

Thanks anyway!Image is a detail-enhanced infrared composite of [MT3, MT2, CB2 images]. The methane transmission filters are narrowband filters that show reflected light at wavelengths that would normally be absorbed by methane. In using this processing, cloud layers that are white have minimal methane absorbtion and are thus higher cloud decks in Saturn's atmosphere. Cloud layers that appear deeper blue (so less MT3 and MT2 but more continuous band infrared radiation) are deeper cloud decks since the methane absorbances are stronger (thus darker in those methane absorbing wavelengths).

Re: Recent Submissions
Marco Lorenzi, I love your Barned 20 image. I'm too lazy to check out which part of the dark cloud is actually Barnard 20, but I much enjoy seeing the Snake nebula at the center of the image. And of course, delightful blue star Theta Ophiuchi (the brightest of the blue stars here) gets a lot of attention!
Geoff Sims, that's a great image. What a conjunction of planets! And I love the colors here. The planets reflect whitely and brightly in the water, while the sky above is dark blue, except for the very orange "ribbon of light" at the horizon.
Bob Fera and Jon Talbot, I enjoy your galaxies. Both are exactly the colors that I expect from NGC 5907 and NGC 4565.
