Between 15 and 25 April 2011 the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian SpaceForum are conducting a series of field tests for a future human mission to Mars in the region of Rio Tinto in southern Spain, one of regions more similar to Mars on Earth.

In collaboration with international research teams, including representatives of U.S. and European space agencies, a prototype for a future spacesuit has been tested as well other devices as the rover can be seen on the left of the image. ~ Juan Carlos Casado

This shot was taken at sunset on March 13th, and the first quarter Moon seen above the Array Operations Site technical facility is the recent "Super Moon." The Moon appears to be in third quarter phase, because this is the southern hemisphere, so it is upside-down! In the foreground is one of the ALMA telescopes, a North American version of the eventual 66 12-meter telescopes that will cover this ancient volcanic plain. To get this shot, I needed to wear an oxygen tank and several layers of clothing, because there's only about half the air pressure here as compared to sea level, and it's nearly always below freezing up here at 16,500 ft. (Tibet averages about the same altitude as ALMA.) ~ T. Burchell

This photo was taken at the Tinto River (Huelva, Spain), near the old copper mines. The deep red color of water is not a consequence of mining activity but is due to the iron oxide produced by the biological activity of extremophile bacteria that live on this acidic water. Its interesting features have been studied as an experimental model to test the ability to seek and find this kind of life on other planets like Mars.

Adam, sorry I'm so late. I just checked out your galaxy image page, and wow! Your image of NGC 5248 is so great! The way it brings out all the star formation in the bright arms, and the ring of star formation around the nucleus, and the star formation in the fainter, outer arms is just superb! And you know how beautiful I find your images, too.

(By the way, I just checked out your latest galaxy image, the NGC 5613 group. That's a fantastic image, too!

There are many great images here. I love Robert Gendler's delightful processing of the Hubble data of M101. Note the central bar structure in this galaxy! And R. Jay GaBany's image of NGC 4631 is splendid, and it makes the Whale Galaxy more dynamic-looking than I've ever seen before. And it's nice to see two portraits of NGC 4945, both very good-looking. It's fascinating to see the interacting duo NGC 3226 and 3227, where the colors are so muted that only the ordered spiral structure and clear dust lanes distinguish the spiral galaxy from the chaotic elliptical. The portrait of NGC3718 (Arp 214), NGC3729, and Arp 322 (Hickson 56) is ethereal-looking and fascinating. I like the pictures of NGC 981 (really good color!) and M83 as well.

But there are other good pictures here, too. I love the picture of NGC 6188 and one of my favorite O stars, HD 150136. I love the Lunar Eclipse and Milky Way at Paranal image, where the luminous band of the Milky Way appears to make an "up turn" at the left of the image and change itself into a humongous celestial serpent, slithering across the sky. I really like the Full Moon over the High Fens image, where the Moon sits square in the middle of the pink "Belt of Venus". And I love the fantastic skyscape, Starry night in the south hemisphere (Saint-Philippe - Reunion Island), captured by Luc Perrot.
