I had to wait for rain and clouds to clear in the Portland area to take a 15 photo composite mosaic through my new Sony Alpha NEX5 from Jonsrud Point near Mount Hood Oregon at 1 AM just after the date of the full perigee moon, so this was then into the first day of Spring. Each photo was assembled or stitched together with use of the Hug-In photo stitching program. Although I optimized the use of proper exposure with my 16mm lens, 30 seconds time exposure to capture the stars and Saturn at f/4 to show the halo in our upper atmosphere, the low lying fog in the valley and the cloud capped Mount Hood at about 20 miles distance from the city of Sandy Oregon. Arcturas is the bright star at center, with Vega rising low in the lower left northeast horizon. Spic is embedded into the trees with Saturn just above it resting atop the golden halo of the moon.
The actual image of the moon was taken a half hour later through the Nexstar 5i telescope and 32mm Plossl eyepiece and compressed to appropriate size and adjusted in Photoshop contrasting and proper edge brightness to its actual appearance in the sky through light high fog, then pasted over the overexposed placement of it is the sky. - Mark Seibold
