I remember when my parents put in a hand pump next to the kitchen sink to pump water from the hand dug well just outside of the farm house they were renting. The house used to be heated by a Kerosene cook stove. It was a two story house, so in the winter the bedrooms would be moved upstairs where it was a little warmer(at least the floors were)and in the summer, the bedrooms would be moved downstairs, where it was a little cooler. I also remember that when indoor plumbing was put in, a pipe was run out to a BIG section of thorn bushes and the like, where a hole was dug and covered over for a septic system. Try doing THAT today and get away with it!
While I'm remembering, after electricity got put in, my mother was washing dishes in the sink when i noticed that she had her hand on the pullchain switch for the light and she looked like a statue. I said hey dad!!!! Ma's not moving. He quickly got over there and smacked her arm to break the connection. Her other hand was in the dish water. It was kinda funny in a way, because she let out a big OW!! What did you do that for. She didn't even know what had happened.

I remember when TV advertisements were NOT louder than the program they were placed in.

Ah! remember the jingles. Now those ads were fun! A lot more catchy than today's ads.

I remember before there was Tivo, and I actually had to see or hear those advertisements.

Oh Orin, that Oscar Mayer wiener song brought back a memory from my first wedding! My new husband and I had decided that if at the reception people wanted us to kiss, dinging glasses would not suffice: an entire table of people (we had a sit-down dinner) would have to stand up and sing a song with the word "love" in it. One of the songs that was sung was the Oscar Mayer wiener song! (Another was the Toyota jingle which goes "I love what you do for me, Toyota!") :-D

Speaking of automobiles... I remember when I could see lots of ground from underneath the hood of my '57 Chevy.

You got a 57 Chevy? Reminds me of a red&white (I think 57) Chevy station wagon my father had. It was a summer morning and my father had rolled down the windows on the drivers side and had come in for breakfast. After breakfast we went out to the car to go somewhere and found a dead hawk on the floor on the frontseat passengers side. We figured that for some unknown reason the hawk wanted to take a shortcut through the open windows. It should have made a u-turn, because the passenger side windows were closed. It didn't make too much of a mess, mostly a Big smudge on the front passengerside window. I don't think Windex had been invented yet.

Hey beyond; this is what your Dad had? I bet you wish it was still in the family. 8-) Only this one isn't red&white

OOOH, that must be the Fancy version. I think my father had the plain run of the mill version in red & white and with (4)-doors. Oh, that reminds me. There's a guy a few miles up the road in massachusetts that does restorations. At any give time he has an assortment of different cars for sale that he has restored. The thing that amazes me, however, is that most of the lawn he parks them on is VERY sloped and i don't see any bare spots in the lawn from spining tires trying to back up there where he puts them.
The car that i wish i still had is almost a toss-up between a 49 Dodge with fluid drive and my 67 Corvette with the 327 engine. THAT was a sports car!!!!

I used to dream of owning a ’57 ‘Vette - red and white or a ’69 Camero – blue.

I miss my ’57 Chevy. I couldn’t afford to keep it running at the time. I was 16 working at the Dairy Queen. Those were the days when I wasn’t afraid of causing a nuclear reaction if I tinkered with the engine.

Hey Orin, Well, It's red like one i had, and i see It's a 427 like the one i had sitting on the front lawn 3 days after i got home from being discharged from the army.(It was second hand) But the wheels are different and i didn't have the side exhaust. The tires, however, may be Prowlers, like i put on. They are (were) a softer composition rubber for grabbing the road better. They are the only tire i know of with the red circle on the sidewall.
I also had a Hurst shifter put in. What a difference in shifter speed!

Before i went into the Army, i had a blue one with the 327. With that size engine, the car was better balanced and BOY, was it fun to drive on back roads! Definitely a TRUE American sportscar. Peppy and good handling. Unfortunately my father sold it after i went into the army. :( :( :( :(

For emc! found this on wikipedia My first car was a '52 Chevy fastback. The rods started hammering on the way home from work one day so I traded it on a '54 Ford. They don't make them like they used to: I'm happy to say. I think Chevy came out with a V8 in '55. That made all the difference in the world. The babbitt bearings in the older cars were pretty delicate.

You know; I can actually remember winters when we only got one or two snowfall all winter and only an inch of the white stuff each time. Ahh; those were the days; no slipping; no sliding; no shoveling;--just coming and going whenever you pleased. :D :) 8-)

A Link to The Past ((50's))

Post by Beyond » Fri Feb 18, 2011 10:34 pm

For the Oldies but Goodies and the youngies too, here's a link to a video someone made of the sounds and sights of the 50's. There's at least one other link that takes you to the website of the person that made it, for more good stuff. Everything is copywrited, but you may link and use for your yourself. You may NOT post anything at another website. ENJOY!! http://oldfortyfives.com/TakeMeBackToTheFifties.htm

I remember most of the things he remembers, but I also remember some other things from that era: Polio and many other childhood diseases, racism, repressive conservatism, sexism (has that gone away yet?)

Nostalgia is best taken with a chaser of beer -- lots of it.

I remember my wife and I going for our Salk Vaccine at the high school when it was available. I don't remember my smallpox shot; but I have the scar on my arm from it. I think bully-ism is one of the problems in today's society!

Check out the cars. :-) I think one of these must have been my grandparents' car, and another perhaps a neighbor's. I'm sure we had only one car back then.

We used to climb up on the backs of the cars and slide down them. Great fun! Not possible with today's cars.

My brother had a '47 Buick like the center one in your picture. I think it was a fastback though. Sliding down the back may be hard on the bottom when you landed on the bumper though.
