The Vela Supernova remnant image is impressive. It looks a tiny bit false color, but it is probably enhanced color rather than false. I don't think I have ever seen so many intricate details brought out in this region of the sky.
The very bright star in the lower right part of the image, is that Gamma Velorum, famous O-type supergiant/Wolf Rayet binary?
I've got to applaud Gote Flodqvist's image, too, for two reasons. The image is really nice, and I like how it brings the subtle colors of the Milky Way. And second, Gote Flodqvist (really Göte Flodqvist) must be a fellow Swede!

My mind can't help but arc Earth like a ping pong ball into the sunspot like a carnival game.
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

Perseids at Palomar
Copyright: Iair Arcavi
Unfortunately, I didn't get to see any of the meteors myself (except for a few which just happened to pass when I was changing camera batteries), as I was inside the dome most of the night, using the mighty 200" telescope to take spectra of distant supernovae. The camera zapping away outside got to see all the action.

I am a graduate student in Astrophysics at the Weizmann Institute of Science. I was lucky enough to be observing at Palomar on August 12, and caught several Perseids over the observatory. The camera (a Canon 50D with a wide angle 10-22 mm lens) was left outside on a tripod taking 25 second exposures in sequence. That night, over 750 images were taken at that position, and about 9 of them caught bright meteors. These 9 images were then combined to form this composite.Unfortunately, I didn't get to see any of the meteors myself (except for a few which just happened to pass when I was changing camera batteries), as I was inside the dome most of the night, using the mighty 200" telescope to take spectra of distant supernovae. Re: Recent Submissions: 2010 August 19-21
I find Wally Pacholka's image extremely beautiful. The composition, the colors, the reflections in the water, the fantastic stillness and serenity broken by a single Perseid. I love the star reflections in the water, but there is no reflection of the Perseid. No wonder: the Perseid was a momentary thing, but the image must be the product of an exposure longer than the time it took for this "shooting star" to flash across the sky.

Somewhat different than Wally's usual style, but I agree, this is a beautiful image. I always enjoy his work.Ann wrote:I find Wally Pacholka's image extremely beautiful. Owlice, is this picture labeled right? A few pictures down you show Andromeda and it is not on edge. Is there a section of space around Andromeda that is labeled Andromeda and NGC-891 is in it so it is called as being IN Andromeda? Or did i miss something important along the way, again??owlice wrote:NGC-891: Edge on Spiral Galaxy in Andromeda

It's in the constellation of Andromeda. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andromeda_ ... llation%29
There's the Andromeda galaxy, which is in ... you guessed it! ... the constellation of Andromeda. But there are other galaxies within the constellation, too.
That said, it could still be labeled incorrectly.

M31 (aka NGC 224), known as The Andromeda Galaxy is a member of the Local Group and is found in the constellation Andromeda and is about 2.5 million light-years away.beyond wrote:Owlice, is this picture labeled right? NGC 891 is also found in the constellation Andromeda, but lies some 30 million light-years away and is not a member of the Local Group.
Wikipedia and Google are your friends. You should try them some time.
Re: Recent Submissions: 2010 August 19-21
What I find so interesting about NGC 891 is that it is the only perfectly edge-on galaxy that I know of. Of course there must be myriads of others, but not nearby, as far as I know.

Now that with your fabulous help i have discovered there is a Constellation AND a Galaxy with the same name, there should be no more confusion.owlice wrote:It's in the constellation of Andromeda. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andromeda_ ... llation%29

I am at a lost as to why i didn't realize what i already knew, albeit differently. Hmm...i just answered my own question. I must be talking to myself. I'd better quit.
