From Happy People Dancing On Planet Earth (APOD 22 Jul 2008):

I posted that video to APOD. About once a month or so, APOD posts an image that is not strictly related to the classical definition of astronomy or space science. Reasons for this are several, including broadening APOD's reader base. APODs like these, in my opinion, interest people in space, science, and astronomy who might not normally have or follow such interests. In my view, the web appears to stratify people by interests, and many times people in one interest group will not wander into other interest areas. Eclectic APODs like this are therefore an attempt to reach across disciplines.

Additionally, in my view, APOD is also about planet Earth, exploration, and making connections between science and things not classically related to science. In this case, this APOD focussed on humans specifically, who have never been highlighted on APOD before. This also gives APOD a "human" link usable inside of future APODs.

Non-sense. You can examine the meaning of each word all you want. The meaning is created when you take all the words together. Maybe you never noticed that the site is called "Astronomy" picture of the day. "Discover the cosmos" is a tag line UNDER the title and therefore within the context of the superior title.

But please, don't mind me.
Only the most narrow minded would think that a video of some guy dancing in various places in the world doesn't belong on a website put up by NASA with the title "Astronomy Picture of the Day".

I love APOD so much so that it has been my startup page for more than a decade. I am disappointed that the staff could not find an astronomy related picture or movie for our viewing pleasures.

bystader - Thank you so much for the ad hominem remarks. Attacking me personally really does so much to advance the discussion.
Negativism? Does that mean a comment from someone who disagrees?
I don't think so. But feel free.

Since so many people seem to think their opinion of the video is somehow a factor in whether it should be included on APOD, I'll throw my two cents in on that. The guy's dancing lacks a little in the variety department, but the fact that he would travel all over the world to show that people are really similar and connected and to use music and dance to show it is pretty cool.

Sorry if I'm not chronically depressed, just have an opinion that does not match yours.

No less than the stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae - we are all creatures of this universe. APOD regularly shows the dances of the cosmos. Totally good to show the dances of some of us lesser creatures. This bit was magnificent, wonderful, humorous, and deeply touching.

Actually, as I count it, 15 posts liked the fact that it was posted on APOD (many about the video and not its appropriateness on APOD), 24 did not like it posted on APOD (nearly all focused on the appropriateness of the video to APOD)and 27 were neutral, humorous or otherwise didn't give a position on the appropriateness of the video to APOD.

If you love the planet, how can you not love this video? Ok, let's keep killing each other because we were exposed to differering influenses as we matured. But I have found that every population world wide love their family and friends, so why in this globally connected world can we not love those 12,000 miles away?
Come on people. By the way, THANKS APOD for the glorious photos of the universe.
