I've pulled the image from that site and attached it here, which will allow everybody to see it easier, and will keep it live after July 20.epitalon wrote:Here is a marked picture of M13... I use "YouSendIt" to post this picture : the above link is availlable till july 20th.
Yes, I can see a hint of something that looks like structure along that line. But honestly, I think I can draw a few other lines that would do this, as well. Our brains are so desperate to find patterns that we tend to see them even when they aren't really there. In this case, there are a few brighter stars that happen to be nearly in line, and we pick up on that very easily. But there is no physicality behind the alignment.

At least no one can accuse me of ever having done that!Chris Peterson wrote:

Thanks for that and for taking my thoughts in consideration.Chris Peterson wrote:I've pulled the image from that site and attached it here,
Me too : on this particular cluster and on some other (at least one other)...epitalon wrote:But honestly, I think I can draw a few other lines that would do this, as well.
The fact that I can see straight lines in globular clusters and not in other celestial bodies could mean something ?!
I am not an astronomer as you can guess. I am just a fan of APOD and I don't miss a P of Day.
