APOD: APOD is 15 Years Old Today (2010 Jun 16)

Post by APOD Robot » Wed Jun 16, 2010 4:05 am

Image APOD is 15 Years Old Today

Explanation: Welcome to the quindecennial year of the Astronomy Picture of the Day! Perhaps a source of web consistency for some, APOD is still here. As during each of the 15 years of selecting images, writing text, and editing the APOD web pages, the occasionally industrious Robert Nemiroff (left) and frequently persistent Jerry Bonnell (right) are pictured above plotting to highlight yet another unsuspecting image of our cosmos. Although the above image may appear similar to the whimsical Vermeer composite that ran on APOD's fifth anniversary, a perceptive eye might catch that this year it has been digitally re-pixelated using many of the over 5,000 APOD images that have appeared over APOD's tenure. (Can you find any notable APOD images?) Once again, we at APOD would like to offer a sincere thank you to our readership for continued interest, support, and many gracious communications.

Thank you APOD for bringing me these visions of creation every morning. I always knew they were out there and just waiting for us to join the party. I spread the word and have convinced people to log on daily. Long may you continue to bring these 'gaspers' into view!

Congratulations for the first 15 years!
I have a confession to make: I wrote a small script on my macbook that captures the apod and puts it as my desktop picture. That's how much I like them.
Thanks for bringing all those gorgeous pictures to us every day!

quote---the occasionally industrious Robert Nemiroff (left) and frequently persistent Jerry Bonnell (right) are pictured above

must be true then the ancients are among us. And i thought they had no photo albums with them. ( my science fiction side of my mind actually thinks if there are UFO's around, they would bring their photo albums and show us ancient photos ) But until i actually see one it will remain science fiction. My favorite APODs were recorded during the EROS landing

I liked the picture a lot! What a nice take on Vermeer's The Astronomer, too. You changed his portrait of one man into a portrait of two persons, Robert Nemiroff and Jerry Bonnell, the creators of Astronomy Picture of the Day. It's a beautiful picture that reminds us of how long humanity has tried to understand the heavens, and it is a very fitting tribute to Robert Nemiroff and Jerry Bonnell, too. Congratulations!

"Happy Birthday" from Turkey!

Can we have a version with a link to the relevant APOD on each mini-image please? (A job which would keep someone in work for the next 15 years!) 8-)

(Psa 19:1) The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
(Psa 97:6) The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.

Thank you, Robert and Jerry (and possibly your colleges), for your meticulous work and succinct explanations in bringing staggering snapshots of this glory to us, every day! One of your postings I enjoyed very much was a movie of a tour starting from Earth and zooming out to the edges of visible space, and then zooming in back to Earth. Thanks again! APOD continues to be one of my favorite sites!

(Isa 44:24) Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself.

Thank you, Robert and Jerry for tending to APOD every day for 15 years! I, too, use it as my home page. I can think of no better way to start my day! the Saturn photos are my all-time favorites - I have used several as my desktop wallpaper. I am impressed and grateful for your dedication to the site. Happy Birthday and many happy returns!

when I enter internet, the first thing I do: I look at my email, then the weather forcast, and then always the "astronomy picture of the day" ! As an artist these pictures give me always inspirations for paintings!

Congratulations.

APOD is my home page, has been for many years. I like to start the day with a bright, up-beat interlude before the rest of the world has a chance to push me, once again, down to its level.
