These smoky rings of the “dying” carbon stars (top to bottom) AQ And, U Ant and TT Cyg ( http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap010304.html )owlice wrote:Dying Carbon Stars

were observed in the far infrared with the now biggest Space Telescope Herschel ( http://sci.esa.int/science-e/www/area/i ... fareaid=16 ) at wavelengths of 70 micron (blue) and 160 micron (red). The cold dust rings represent phases of high mass loss that happened some thousand years ago. Also our sun will experience similar processes in 6 billion years from now.
I hope you like them!

Wow, that's some solar prominence and eruption! Where is the "Wow, I'm amazed" emoticon?
The comet and its lost tail was fun to watch too. As for the carbon stars, I don't doubt for a moment that such stars have been hugely important for the enrichment of the interstellar medium with heavy elements, and let's not forget that these super-red guys makes for fun observing at the telescope.... but these false color pictures were not for me. Thanks for posting them anyway!
