Re: Space mystery object #30
You said it was a good thing I wasn't very confident in my thinking this was a rendering of some sort, and not an actual astronomical image. Did I misunderstand something there? There were enough negated negatives to be a little confusing.owlice wrote:Chris, my apologies! What was the bad clue?
Anyway, I stopped looking at paintings and renderings and started focusing on images of actual objects.

Ah! The object at which you were looking -- the yellow disk or sphere quadrant -- is an astronomical image, not a rendering of it. (I'm confident that it came from the May 4, 2005 APOD, rotated and flipped vertically and with the edge-on rings and moon removed.) My apologies for not making that clearer; I was responding solely to what you posted about the yellow disk or sphere.
I had hoped that the background (brown rather than black) and the bisecting thingie would be enough to get people to start looking at something other than photographs. I meant to make this a challenge, but not quite so much of one. SO hard to get the balance right (for me, anyway!)!

Something easy for a change. Also should make a nice sample of pictures to browse through while searching.

Space mystery object
Just something I was wondering all the time. Do people actually bother to go and look for mystery objects that have been already found? Do we have to use those spoiler tags?
Re: What is it? Space mystery object
only 4 votes on my poll and all are negative. I don't think spoilers are necessary.

Is this post now dead? If someone would tell me how to create an image in here I would be more than happy to post another, because this was a brilliant game!

Space mystery object #32
Okay, enough whining about the delay. This one pulls out all the stops on underhanded crops, and I hope it will give me a few days respite.

Re: What is it? Space mystery object
some galaxy shit, too chaotic for jupiter shot. looks like this one color-wise, but wrong picture
Re: What is it? Space mystery object
I have looked at every APOD thumbnail that exists and every APOD image with brown in it, and have not found it! So I have questions... I have questions!
Chris, did you manipulate the image/crop in any way? Is the size of the crop true to the image from which it was taken? Has the orientation been changed? Was it taken from the APOD image itself, or an image that the APOD image links to?

Re: What is it? Space mystery object
The image is cropped from the larger image the APOD links to. That is the only thing done- no changes to color, orientation, etc. And the larger image is just that- a bigger version of the view shown on the main APOD page, not a different image or some sort of link error.owlice wrote:Chris, did you manipulate the image/crop in any way? I chose this particular image to stimulate some additional discussion on another thread that was very active, but hasn't been lately.

It looks like a small crop of NGC 253. The dust lanes of this galaxy are spectacular.

Re: What is it? Space mystery object
No. in this game you should be the first one to find the APOD image, that this has been cropped from.ngc1535 wrote:Has someone already answered this?

after finding the APOD, you have to post the link here. then you are going to choose a crop for next round.
if you think it's a part of NGC 253, search it in APOD Search and post the link here.

No, it isn't NGC 253.ngc1535 wrote:Has someone already answered this?

Here's a little hint: I chose this image because it's relevant to this discussion, and I thought it might stimulate some more posts there. If somebody doesn't get the answer in the next day or so, I'll be very disappointed!

Re: What is it? Space mystery object
will it rain tomorrow, Chris?
you must have taught us how to use a time machine.
really, how some folks can access future APODs?

Master of understatement! (Totally cracked me up!)Chris Peterson wrote:This one pulls out all the stops on underhanded crops
You have writ a little poem perfect for your sig:
- I pulled out all the stops
On underhanded crops
Since the tide has turned to underhanded (<g>) and in anticipation of being declared the winner of this round of SMO, I submit this puzzle for the next round of the game.
