forum timestamps indicate that you managed to solve this in 14 minutes. maybe we need to consider to split questions in two "weight classes", "for Wayne" and "for regular people" :D p.s. funny how asteroid is actually not a streak, but the dot in the very center.

given that you liked the idea of animated gifs in questions, I would place my bet on http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap060215.html. I didnt go as far as to check frames, though, so I am waiting for your confirmation :P

This "round" edge is probably deceptive, it may be not a star/planet/moon at all. Although I checked fisheye apods, none seem to match.

What is it? Space mystery object #20

Here goes number 20, a crop from mysterious sky object:

I expect this to be reasonably hard, so I made another spare crop, which I expect to post as additional hint later, but - who knows - maybe Wayne will recognize it right away.

Wayne stated that he's "taking the image from the high-res version" (which is rotated), so there was no "change in perspective" by Wayne.

ok, seeing that even our search-fu master Wayne can't find it, I am posting another crop I saved from the image.

The second crop is almost unmistakably a lens flare. Which sort of helps narrow it down. Back to the search box!

This was a good one. I would never have got this without the extra clue. Well done.

Yes, that was dumb luck that the image sequence had a satellite passing it, otherwise I don't think anyone would have got it!

Yes you have to allow for an image to be something else too.

The Cosmological Principle: Not always your friend.

As usual, the APOD this image comes from is the answer. I'll run it for 3 days and then start posting clues if nobody's solved it in the meantime.
