Avatars (not the blue people)
Avatars (not the blue people)
One of our regular <?> members asked the question, "Any particular reason avatars are disabled?" Nobody seems to know the answer. So here is a poll:
Re: Avatars (not the blue people)
I don't understand what phpBB avatars are. Are they just online cartoon versions of ourselves? If so, how are they selected? Is there a link you can provide that gives example phpBB avatars for people on other boards? The answers to these questions might sway my vote.

An avatar on most boards is simply an image the member provides for themselves. On one board I use this one, and will likely do so here if allowed. ...

It's just a picture of yourself or something you choose to represent yourself. One selects one's own avatar. Here is a link to a thread on another forum I frequent with users who have avatars. One of them even has his own drawing of a blue guy for his avatar.

Would this be more appropriate? :rstevenson wrote:An avatar on most boards is simply an image the member provides for themselves. On one board I use this one, and will likely do so here if allowed. ...

Homer's cool, in a philosophical way, but I made the donut I use as an avatar -- at my now closed donut shop, called The Donut Machine, here in Dartmouth. Organic flour, eggs and milk, lots of cinnamon and nutmeg, deep-fried and served warm with a variety of toppings. All I have now is the picture, and my waistline thanks me for that.neufer wrote:Would this be more appropriate? :

Organic donuts.

Re: Avatars (not the blue people)
Most forums I've been involved with allow avatars. I think they just add a bit of personality, as folks can use what ever images they want. Like Geckzilla suggested, as long as the maximum file sizes are kept reasonable, performance shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Re: Avatars (not the blue people)
Avatars are nice. They make it a little quicker to tell who is posting, and add a personal touch. I use the same one on all the boards I participate in (this is the only phpBB forum I've seen that doesn't have them enabled). They're only a few thousand bytes- I don't think they significantly affect page load times even with slow connections.

I was referring to the off-topic posts that have magically disappeared from here and reappeared in their own thread.
