Perseid Meteor Shower '09

Post by Orca » Wed Aug 05, 2009 4:04 am

Anyone going to make a point to see the show?

The Perseids peak on Wednesday August 12. Not great for me as I won't be able to view them until at least that Friday night. There should be increased numbers of meteors for a while on either side of the peak, though.

So if you get the chance, look northeast around midnight!

Thanks for the reminder. But can you send someone with experience from the great northwest to cut down my trees?

Same at my location, but I did see some on tv on the 11:00 news. Better than nothing. And cutting the trees wouldn't have done any good.

That's a matter of opinion. As the photo/map shows (and as you know since you are local), the quadrants of DC are centered on the Capitol, not on the points of the border. I live just off the top of the map, a couple of pixels to the right (east) of the point that would be second base. (Locals also know that DC was originally the full diamond - 10 miles on a side - but later gave back the part on the VA side of the river.) Anyway, I'm closest to the NW quadrant of Washington, but you could argue that I'm in the NE quadrant of greater Washington. The lumberjack I requested was from Oregon. Savvy astronomers can spot the location of the US Naval Observatory in NW.
