HST Ghost (2009 May 25)

Post by Ollie » Mon May 25, 2009 1:40 pm

Are the ghost images of the HST in todays Apod 25-05-09 caused by reflections off of Atlantis window?

I never noticed the ghost until you mentioned it. I'm not sure where the reflection comes from.

In the APOD photo dated May 25, the photo is of the HST; my questions is what is the disturbance seen just below the lower panels at the earth's horizon?

Hi Persia

I think the disturbance is a ghost image of the HST caused by taking the photo through a window of the Atlantis orbiter. Some times when a photo is taken through a window you get this effect. I guess it is some thing to do with refraction? Mabey someone, a phographer perhaps could confirm this for us :!:

There will be a double internal reflection that will be displaced from the original
by an amount dependent on the angle and thickness of the glass (periscope like):

It is designed for maximum strength to withstand the shuttle's cabin pressure in the vacuum of space. The thick fused silica middle pane is capable of withstanding both the reentry temperature and the cabin pressure.>>

I believe it would be a negative image of the Mirror image that is reflected on the outside of the window glass

If you open the image in full mode you can even get to see the hand that takes the picture.

Definetely window reflection.
