Thanks, everyone. I (now) agree that it is most likely that the X is caused by the contrails being illuminated from above, not below. I have now updated the text on the main NASA APOD to indicate this. I apologize for the mistake.

Sorry, you have two wrong explanations here. It was NOT the SpaceX Falcon9 rocket from Cape Canaveral. It couldn't be , since that one launched AFTER this spiral event already had occured , and that one did not fly on an orbit far north enough to reach the high arctic skies.... The fact is , it was...

The photographer has now said that this image was taken last November, in 2022. The text of the main NASA APOD has been corrected.

An email alerts me that Helium was first discovered on the Sun in 1868, not in 1870 as originally mentioned. I have now corrected the date on the main NASA APOD and apologize for the oversight. - RJN
