Re: What is it? Space mystery object #27 (a, b, and c)

wonderboy, I admire your persistance, and am sorry to tell you that your last link is not the solution to the first crop. (So no need to be angry! :) ) Actually, I'm completely puzzled as to how you came up with that! The crop is taken from the image as it appeared on APOD, not from a much larger or...

Yay again, Paul! One more; I thought the first one would be difficult and I'm happy to post another crop from that APOD if folks want.

Re: Books!

Orca, I haven't read the Isaacson book on Einstein. Some years ago, I read Einstein: A Life by Denis Brian and thought it quite good. It's been many years since I've read 1984 and Brave New World ; they are around here somewhere and I should probably re-read them. note to self: move 1984 and Brave N...

Re: What is it? Space mystery object #27 (a, b, and c)

The first one is the one I thought would be the hardest; the second and third would depend on level of familiarity with astronomy. I'm not surprised you got those quickly! And yes, I suppose it does say something about the way I search images. As someone who knows.... well, nothing, actually, I have...

Nuttin' wrong with forming teams for this, is there?

makc, I didn't know you'd been keeping a winners list! Perhaps you can wait until the dust settles to see whether this will be too messy to continue your list?

What is it? Space mystery object #27 (a, b, and c)

Yes, a multiparter; I think these range in difficulty from easy to... not so easy. 8-) I could be wrong, though; please let me know!

neufer wrote:So that orange thingy is really Betelgeuse.
Yup! Or at least a very small version of it.
If placed at the center of our Solar System, [Betelgeuse] would extend past the orbit of Jupiter.
I remember reading that sentence in APOD and having to pick my jaw up off the floor. That's one big star!

Re: What did you learn from APOD today?

Among other things, I learned that speckles make an egg stronger (!), and that it's been so long since I've heard Holst's "The Planets," I didn't recognize Venus when I heard it.

Too bad for you I'm immune to the stickiness of the song! :D (Even if I weren't, I actually like it and have willingly been through the ride many times in my life.) A well-rounded education

I'm curious as to what you might consider a well-rounded education for, say, a 21-year-old who is a competent, bright student. If you share your thoughts on this matter, I'll be most interested to read them!
