"shows, unexpectedly, that this red-glowing dust is associated with hot plasma."
Is it unexpected because there is plasma inside stars, but this is plasma dust in between stars, as if chunks of plasma were blown out of stars?

Re: APOD: NGC 1097: Spiral Galaxy with Supernova (2023 Oct 11)
Any idea if the differences between the two images--apart from the supernova--are because of differences in sky conditions at the respective times or because of brightening from the nova? Nothing to do with the SN. It's just really difficult image processing to create two identical images of the sa...

Tarantula has the largest star forming area in the local group! Wow!
That's quite something for a small Galaxy!

Re: APOD: Planets of the Solar System: Tilts... (2022 Sep 11)
The way Jupiter's tilt is when spinning around its axis, would that mean that the Sun is low in the sky in the polar regions? Unless this is a trick question, the answer is yes! And the same goes for Mercury and Venus. All three rotate almost perpendicularly to the plane of their orbit around the S...

Re: APOD: Spiral Galaxy NGC 1512: The Inner Rings (2022 May 08)
I'm wondering if there are any phenomena on Earth that generate spiral objects with bars. Not to my knowledge, and I don't think it is possible. After all, a spiral galaxy with a bar and a ring is a tremendously huge and dynamical system, whereas the Earth is a (comparatively) tiny ball of rock, wi...

Is it possible that Mercury is becoming less and less of a planet (very, very, very slowly) over time because of this and other forces?

Re: APOD: Planet Parade over Sydney Opera House (2022 Apr 26)
Why exactly is the line of planets mostly horizontal in the northern hemisphere but more vertical in the southern hemisphere? :) I wondered that myself, but I think it has to do with the difference between the Earth's equatorial plane and the ecliptic, the Earth's path around the Sun. (I say the ec...
