Very interesting discussions of wavelengths in this image and how they're mapped "to the primary display channels ..." (Chris). But does anyone else see a winged creature hovering over that central area?

To me, the main part of the picture nebula looks like a person, a bit ghostly, with a round head and two dark eyes, head above a narrow torso, right arm outstretched, left arm tucked close in, possibly right leg bent up. Thanks, Art, for the references! Interesting stuff. I read The Illustrated Man as a teenager in the mid '60s, but sad to say I don't remember any of it. Ok, so now I have a (re)reading assignment.

In most of the deep field images I've seen, any Milky Way stars in the field of view are "spiky" due to their relative brightness and optical effects of the telescope. I see two in this image. So are the rest of the points of light in this image extremely distant galaxies, or just really f...
