Sorry to be so obtuse... but the location of the star seemingly labeled VAR! shows only a tiny speck between the diagonal lines and is nowhere near the image of the 'nebula'; it's almost out of the frame. A synod is an ecclesiastical conference. The first use of the word was in the Middle Ages.
