Re: APOD: Two Black Holes Dancing in 3C 75 (2022 Jun 05)

Love that GIF, AVAO! I knew of the helical motion of the planets in the solar system as the Sun drags them along, of course, but the GIF looks stunning, anyway. But surely there is a difference between a system of two black holes orbiting each other and planets orbiting the Sun? Yes, I know that te...

Re: APOD: 2MASS J17554042+6551277 (2022 Mar 19)

Regarding the resolution of the engineering-picture from JWST, where several think it's low: It has to do with wave-length. It's unfair to compare a picture taken in the UV-Visible range(where Hubbel opperates), and compare it directly with an image taken in the deeep part of the IR. The diameter o...

Let me begin by passing a verdict: NGC 4565 is a quite yellow galaxy ███ , and not very colorful at all. Ann I totally agree with you. Today's APOD image is too colorful looking at the blue and red ends. In reality the galaxy is probably very similar to NGC 4594 (Sombrero Galaxy) and also quite ina...

This star-filled image, taken by Hubble in near-infrared wavelengths of light (right side), reveals a very different view of the Lagoon Nebula compared to its visible-light portrait. Re: APOD: The Lively Center of the Lagoon Nebula (2022 May 25)

My point is that I don't expect the stars near the center of the Lagoon Nebula to be reddened by the same amount. But they do, indeed, look about equally red. My guess is that these stars have been detected by one and the same infrared filter, and therefore the huge majority of them appear to be th...

Re: APOD: NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide (2022 May 17)

I think that many of the faint white dots seen scattered over the face of NGC 1316 in the Hubble image are globulars. My guess is that some of the brighter white dots are not globulars, but foreground stars, and that goes for more than the obvious star "above" the most prominent dust lane...
