Is the music really by Claude Debussy? This is Jeff Dai's Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/p/C8bIkxTyiUL/ Here, it uses Clair de lune. But in APOD, the music is different. Can anyone tell me which piece it is exactly? No. We apologize for confusion about the music. It was changed out due t...

Re: APOD: Messier 66 Close Up (2024 Jun 13)

This is an old image. I remember it well, and you can tell its age from one of its authors, Hubble Heritage . The Hubble Heritage Project started in 1998 and came to an end in 2016, and I don't think that the M66 image was one of the last pictures published by Hubble Heritage, either. It was publis...

A polite correction here:
As this chart is dated, I think it needs an update which adds Tiangong, as the ISS is no longer the only space station which is home to astronauts!

Re: APOD: The Nebulous Realm of WR 134 (2024 May 31)

Given that something like 85% of high mass stars are part of binary systems, maybe the question to ask is why only 50% of WR stars are binaries? OK, so I ask: Why 85% of high mass stars are part of binary systems? One answer probably has to do with the formation process of high-mass stars. https://...

Re: APOD: The Nebulous Realm of WR 134 (2024 May 31)

It is estimated that about 50% of Wolf-Rayet stars occur in binary systems. Proposed companions are another Wolf-Rayet star, or a compact companion such as a black hole or neutron star. There is some evidence for both of these scenarios, but conclusive observations have yet to be obtained. The only...

In the big picture, no species can evolve for long if the old versions aren't eliminated. You need reproduction for adaptation and evolution, and you can't have reproduction without death in any system with limited resources. OK, let's say that hypothetically, some genetic mutations have made it po...

Re: Weather!

DNA gets damaged over time, toxins accumulate over time. Some pest, parasite, or disease will eventually win. And evolution doesn't favor organisms that don't die and make room for future generations. How can evolution favor an organism's death? In the big picture, no species can evolve for long if...

Well, they have a lifespan of a few hundred years, depending on conditions. Maybe it will be there for another 200. But not forever. Yes, but why a tree can't live forever? I mean, some have been living for more than a millennia. Why this tree can't live that long? DNA gets damaged over time, toxin...

Re: APOD: Simulation: Two Black Holes Merge (2024 May 10)

According to the mathematics that I learned, 36 + 31 = 67, which is 4 (four) more than 63, not 3 more. Of course, this could easily be a matter of rounding issues. But then, if the actual figures were known with greater precision, it would have been quite possible to supply those numbers instead of...
