THE WOBBLY EARTH If we shrink one year To ten seconds We shall notice The Wobbly Earth 365 rotations in 10 seconds Two wobbles in 10 seconds The loose atmosphere also churns Due to inertia The rivers meander too Due to same inertia of the flowing water The Seasons change one cycle And the sky rains ...

A New Genre in Science Fiction "ENGINEERING FICTION"
Hi
I propose a new Genre related to Science Fiction - The "ENGINEERING FICTION". I have started writing the engineering fiction story which is related to Civil/Mining Engineering. A fictitious code will also accompany the story. The name of the fiction is "THE CODE OFFICER".

I think that a Sustainability Index for space should be developed and published on periodically basis to provide quantifiable data on the ground situation.

I would like to know more what exactly mathematics / physics say about singularities here. " You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. There's uh, singularity-kabobs, singularity creole, singularity gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple singularities, lem...

Re: Aesthetics & Motivations and Beauty in Engineering
The design phase of an infrastructure project, is where most of the creativity is to be found, in my (probably biased) opinion. The bulk (ideally all) of the design phase occurs pre-construction, and typically represents a small fraction of the overall cost of the project. Decisions made in the des...

Re: Aesthetics & Motivations and Beauty in Engineering
For a Modern Engineer, time is also important because time is money. The engineering solution / project must use minimum time & it should be predictable. The time is also monitored to keep it on the path. Complex engineering projects are managed by breaking them into small works and are linked. ...

A modern construction manager/engineer juggles with 5 Ms - Money, Materials, Manpower, Machinery & Management to deliver projects to the client. Efficiency is the chief motivation in each of the 5Ms otherwise he is out of business.

Re: Aesthetics & Motivations and Beauty in Engineering
It may be feared that simplicity may compromise on cost/safety/etc. But if simplicity is adopted in a judicious way and supported by research, it can reduce costs and provide a workable solution. I see this in may areas of Civil Engineering (the Mother of all modern engineering disciplines) and am ...

Aesthetics & Motivations and Beauty in Engineering
This topic is on the top of my mind these days. The chief motivation in engineering is providing something tangible to the society by the use of maths & science. In this process, we see a pattern in problem solving in engineering. One pattern is "simplicity" and it works in an excellen...

I got into this from my childhood. I am 54 years old and have been reading on astrophysics and take it as a hobby. I am a Civil Engineer by profession and work as a consultant. So maths & science interests me.

Re: Light as a Singularity in space-time/space & propagation of sound.
According to me, there are many examples of singularities: (i) The event-horizon near the black-hole - a sort of boundary which separates predictable zone ( where events are governed by laws of physics) from the unpredictable zone (ii) The big-bang (iii) God (iv) life itself may be called as a singu...

Re: Light as a Singularity in space-time/space & propagation of sound.
Let us discuss singularity. A black hole is a singularity - we all would quickly agree. This is because the back-hole phenomena is out of normal physics laws and we can go any further. As a matter of fact we cannot go near it to investigate - we will annihilate in second. We all agree to this single...

Re: What is Complete Attention
Is complete attention is when we don't question a fact? Why I say this is a fact cannot be contradicted - it is. There is an element of silence also associated with it. So, when we encounter a fact do we naturally can give it complete attention?

Re: Light as a Singularity in space-time/space & propagation of sound.
One of the reasons why I am proposing that light is a singularity because of its inexplicable properties. Some of the properties are explained by quantum mechanics and others by theory of relativity. There is no single rule for light and its behaviour even though can be predicted, in the normal day ...

Re: What is Complete Attention
When a photon strikes an electron, 100% of the energy of the photon is transferred to the electron and the photon vanishes. The electron starts moving and we have an electric current - this is what happens in the photo-electric effect. The completeness of the transfer of energy from the photon to th...

What is Complete Attention
As discussed by J Krishnamurthy, attention is one of the attributes of Humans that need to be discussed and explored. Complete attention is something when the observer is the observed. We normally have partial attention only and this leads to a gap between the observed and the observer. This gap may...
