Re: APOD: Total Solar Eclipse of 1979 (2017 Aug 19)
Three totals for the USA in 7 years; pretty cool! 8-) Three :?: "Moonfall", Jack McDevitt. There won't be a 2052 eclipse due to lack of sufficient Moon. There might be lots of transits of Sol by bits. It's quite strange how we keep catching up with the "future" as describ...

Re: APOD: M13: The Great Globular Cluster in... (2017 May 12)
Wonder how it would be to sit inside that cluster? The sky would be crowded with suns of different sizes. Is it hot? By the way, could there be any planets to land on, or do I have to stay on board my vessel? The whole globular cluster has to rotate in some way to prevent the stars from collapsing ...

Re: APOD: M13: The Great Globular Cluster in... (2017 May 12)
The burning question, so to speak, is as to why these clusters aren't/haven't formed into rotating disks ? From what I (poorly) understand, Globular Clusters, Elliptical Galaxies and the yellowed-reddish cores of spiral galaxies don't really rotate like a spinning football (a spherical one, not one...

Re: APOD: Split the Universe (2017 Apr 01)
Good on yah mates! For, even knowing the date, one sucked in. However, whether real or virtual the button-press interaction does in actuallity change/split the universe. There are three future-verses from the point where someone has come upon this APOD: 1) No press of the button; 2) Button press &a...

Re: APOD: Ganymede's Shadow (2017 Mar 25)
Just keep in mind that astronomical images are normally processed so that the darkest areas are somewhat above totally black, in order to allow subtle detail in the dark areas to be visible. While this image may appear better with a high black point, you will be losing something in some images. Coo...

Re: APOD: Ganymede's Shadow (2017 Mar 25)
I'm sure others have noticed the black rectangles near the two moons... but what are they? Was Jupiter too bright compared to the moons to get them all in one exposure? Black rectangles? Where? I see none. There are large black rectangles between each moon and Jupiter- darker than the background. I...

Re: APOD: Black Hole Accreting with Jet (2017 Mar 27)
Generally, I don't like fakes (artist's impressions, especially of exoplanets), but this one I think is pretty good! In general, I'm with you, especially with singularities and their accretion disks though "artists' impressions" of planets and planetary systems also irk me a little. I wou...

I'm manfully avoiding the humorous retort of "Monoliths".

Hi. As you work at an observatory, could I as what "p" is, please? Top left side, I'm guessing that "N" is north but I can't decide between many possibilities for the orthogonal "P" direction. "Positive"? "Prograde"? "Pandas-this-way"? P=p...

<<... An example of a DCM heat engine is the drinking bird. The toy works at room temperature.>> Hmm, probably wouldn't work in my room. It's freezing in here.
