Ann, thank you for another well illustrated lecture! I found the image showing the future parts of the Local Group galaxies particularly interesting.

Re: APOD: In the Heart of the Rosette Nebula (2023 Feb 06)
Using Wikipedia and the SIMBAD database I have identified the following stars: The brightest one in the picture is a foreground star, 12 Monocerotis, a K0 giant at a distance of 462 la with V = 5.83. The bright blue star to its right is the O4 star HD 46223 at a distance of 4680 la with V = 7.28. Th...

Re: APOD: The Seventh World of Trappist-1 (2023 Feb 01)
When seeing illustrations of this kind, I am always a little suspicious: Are the discs shown really that large? So I did a little calculation using data (in green) from the Internet: TRAPPIST system.jpg The central star has an angular diameter of about 1°, twice the value of that of the Sun as seen ...

Re: APOD: Barnard 68: Dark Molecular Cloud (2023 Jan 29)
I am intrigued with the comparison of Barnard 68 in visible and infrared light, as presented by ESO https://www.eso.org/public/images/eso0102c/ : https://cdn.eso.org/images/screen/eso0102c.jpg Background stars are heavily reddened from the passage of their light through the cloud; red colour chosen ...

Re: APOD: In Green Company: Aurora over Norway (2023 Jan 22)
When this image was posted on APOD several years ago, I had the same problems with it as Ann. An earlier post http://asterisk.apod.com/viewtopic.php?t=41170 suggests that the peak is ”Pilan” looking over Laupstad in the Austnesfjord. According to https://mapcarta.com/N6391608680 Pilan’s position is ...

Re: APOD: Little Planet South Pole (2022 Aug 26)
The extreme projection used makes it difficult to identify stars. I beleive I have found the pair Alpha and Beta Centauri at about 2 o'clock, the Coalsack with the Southern Cross (upside down ) at 1 o'clock, the Eta Carinae nebula in the Milky Way at 12 o'clock and above it, close to the upper...

Re: APOD: Full Moon Perseids (2022 Aug 18)
I agree with Ann: This is a wide angle shot going from one horizon to the opposite one, and the Moon is heavily overexposed. It is indeed the Pleiades which can be seen on the right side of the image at the height of the tower. Capella is visible as the bright star just right of the tower. Higher up...

Re: APOD: Herschel Crater on Mimas (2022 Aug 13)
This is an intriguing image. There seems to be no exterior crater wall. Perhaps this is due to the low gravity on Mimas, resulting in permanent ejection of all material which was blown out at the impact? Also, the crater has a steep, smooth wall. Is the reason, that the inside of the crater at some ...

Re: APOD: A Vortex Aurora over Iceland (2022 Apr 04)
A fascinating picture indeed! I have identified some of the background stars: The relatively bright one to the right is Arcturus. At top middle one can see the tail of the Great Bear - together with a small sporadic meteor trail, I presume. To the left of the aurora one can discern the W of Cassiope...

Thanks to Joe Stieber for the identification and johnnydeep for the finding chart. I looked for the Kids much closer to Capella.
Also I can see now that the stars to the right lie in the eastmost part of Perseus.

Re: APOD: Northern Summer Twilight (2021 Jun 19)
A serene picture indeed! I have difficulties in identifying the stars. At first I thought that the bright star in the middle must be Capella and part of Perseus standing at the top right, a familiar summer view here from Denmark. But inspection of the high resolution image (which shows a lot of star...
