I'm an old fuddy-duddy, I know. But I think - in comparison to the scientific rewards that come from unmanned robotic missions (Hubble, Cassini, Mars rovers, for example) - manned missions are a bad deal, scientifically speaking. Are the bright blue knots of light star clusters? They seem much too bright and resolved to be individual stars. Or are they also nebulae like the red knots? They're stars. Some could be individual stars, but it's likely that many are multi-star systems and clusters, just as they are in our own Mil...

About how many Milky Way stars are included in that APOD? I assume that all but a few of the "objects" in the pic are distant galaxies, and maybe 6 to 10 local stars ?

When we look at the APOD photo of NGC 1309 are we able to see individual stars? Or are the bright points of light in the photo of the galaxy actually clusters of stars?
