70 hours of exposure. That's dedication (and a steady tripod).

Re: APOD: Charon: Moon of Pluto (2023 Jun 03)

Of some interest is the large crater halfway between the centre of the image and about the 7 o'clock position, which appears to be overlaid by a (or two) features which form part of the 'belt'. This also happens further East at about the 2 o'clock position, indicating that the belt of deformation is...

I find diffraction spikes quite distracting - especially when artificially introduced! However, in the frame of an exceedingly distant object (ie Hubble's renditions of galaxy groups) the appearance of one or two gives a measure of the scale of the piece.

Re: APOD: Mammatus Clouds over Mount Rushmore (2020 Dec 07)

So that's what theyr'e called! I saw a tremendous example once, on the plain to the South of Kilimanjaro; from horizon to horizon, the cloud seemed to be boiling in cells - seen from beneath. It was quite scary, in fact, as I doubt that anyone who saw it would have known what was going on (except pe...

Re: APOD: Boulders on Bennu (2019 May 24)

It's incredible, looks like any other dump on earth! Definitely it is a miracle that we do exist! It actually looks very like the rubble field left behind after an open-pit mining blast, but one which has not been particularly successful in reducing the rubble to average, manageable sizes. Certainl...

Re: APOD: Asperitas Clouds Over New Zealand (2018 Aug 19)

I saw such clouds near Mt Kilimanjaro when I lived there, together with another peculiar phenomenon; a low ceiling of dark cloud arranged in hexagonal cells, which appeared to 'boil'. This took place on the plain between Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru, which with the Lelatema range of hills to the South, i...

Re: APOD: Painting with Jupiter (2018 Apr 07)

I certainly agree that the original photography is beautiful, but occasionally am quite happy that it is bent to an artistic purpose; the artistry intended to give the original a slightly different texture, purely for appreciation of the subject. Almost all of the images on the APOD site do that for...

Instantly reminded of the craters left in Arctic regions by methane eruptions during the melt of permafrost. Photographs of these are startlingly similar.
