Re: APOD: Doomed Star Eta Carinae (2015 Dec 27)

I can't wait for Betelgeuse, Eta Carinae or Sher 25 to either outburst dramatically again or blow up in a supernova. Heh, an Eta Carinae supernova would bake Earth's little DNA creatures to a light crisp, but sure, let's have a watch... Maybe go to a binary nova star that freaks me out: IK Pegasi, ...

Re: APOD: Doomed Star Eta Carinae (2015 Dec 27)

I noticed in the light curve that around 1940 Eta Carinae experienced another brightening that continues to this day. Wonder if this means another Great Eruption? In any case, I can't wait for Betelgeuse, Eta Carinae or Sher 25 to either outburst dramatically again or blow up in a supernova.

I know I'm replying to an old topic. I call it: the 'Northern Homunculus'. Like the 'Northern Trifid', NGC 1579.

Re: APOD: Centaurus A (2015 Nov 19)

NGC 185 in the Local Group is a dwarf galaxy with a Seyfert 2 nucleus but it is also unsure if it should be considered a Seyfert. Nonetheless it is an active galaxy and a member of the M31 subgroup in the Local Group only 2.5 million ly away.

G1 globular cluster in M31

So I processed some HLA data of this globular cluster recently and created this image: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uNeGyO_HAqM/Vk01uFqfVDI/AAAAAAAAAPs/23CjsEG48FM/s400/Mayall%2BII.jpg One interesting thing about this globular cluster is its ellipsoid shape. The globular cluster Omega Centauri which be...
