Re: APOD: The Butterfly Nebula from Hubble (2022 Nov 21)
You would see the central star with a bit of gray fuzz around it. The nebula itself would be largely invisible to the naked eye. It wouldn't matter how close you get... the brightness of extended objects doesn't change with distance. Thanks for the enlightening reply. Big difference between science...

Re: APOD: The Butterfly Nebula from Hubble (2022 Nov 21)
I've followed APOD for many years, and this is a typically spectacular photo. But such photos are typically long exposures, which begs the question: What would the Butterfly Nebula look like in "real life?" In other words, if one was in a spacecraft positioned close enough to this nebula t...

Re: APOD: Confirmed Muon Wobble Remains... (2021 Apr 13)
OK, muons wobble more than predicted. That may well be big news for the realm of quantum physics. Wake me up when we get back to an "Astronomy" Picture of the Day. Well this is a rather dismaying comment. This kind of muon research is inextricably linked to astrophysics. I thought this ph...

Re: APOD: Equinox in the Sky (2020 Sep 22)
This is a very useful demonstration of how the Sun moves across the northern hemisphere sky at different times of the year. This photo would be helpful in any elementary school class, when helping students develop a fundamental understanding of astronomy.

Re: APOD: How to Wash Your Hair in Space (2017 Dec 20)
I would shave my head before going up, then keep it as short as possible while on ISS. It just seems easier and far more practical.
