I wonder why in this case the color returns to blue on the outside edge of the ring. Nice image.

Re: APOD: Ganymede from Juno (2023 Nov 28)

I noticed some of the larger craters, particularly those on the left in the maria, have a crater within a crater, instead of a peak. Made me wonder if the event that caused the maria “melted” the base of what may have been peaks, causing them to collapse.

Re: Video Submissions

While we’re waiting to see if comet Nishimura survived perihelion, here’s an animation of actual image stacks placed into a CG environment, to give you the sense of flying with it for 2 weeks. If its felt that too much “artistic license” was taken on placing/sizing depicted elements, I could try for...

Re: Submissions: 2023 September

Here’s comet Nishimura the morning of 9-7-23 from a fairly light polluted California city/town backyard. Stacked 50 of 20 sec exposures using a Meade LX200, Astropixelprocessor, and Startools. I’ll keep tweaking all the bazillion software knobs but really liked how this comet is turning out. BTW Chr...

Chris , did you end up using software to find the meteors and stack them? I ended up writing code that kind of worked but of course was dominated with planes.

Really nice composite.

Is anyone familiar with software or script that’s good for detecting meteors in a captured video?

That’s interesting that those elements were created so non-homogeneously, maybe each comes from different depths of the originating star when it explodes.

And are the lower clouds darker due to shadowing by the higher clouds?

Has a 3D stereo image been done of Jupiter’s clouds? That might look amazing to actually see the cloud depth.

Wow that telescope can float for 3 months, what a neat idea. I just watched a live presentation of a similar telescope that targeted the UV spectrum on short flights, which was said has hardly been imaged at all.

Nice. Just wondering if any of you has seen any green through a telescope? I still barely see a white fuzzball in a 10” scope, and nothing naked-eye, but I'm in somewhat light polluted skies. I noticed a few green stars in the middle image…

Re: APOD: Mars Rises above the Lunar Limb (2022 Dec 09)

I think that makes sense, plus the reflected light back from Mars spreads radially again. The visual comparison between red and gray brightness might make it more confusing too, maybe its worth converting the image to monochrome.

I can only imagine what the imagery of things to come might be like. Picture settling down on the lunar surface with a ultra high def 360 AR video, full of detailed features, long south pole shadows, sound, or riding along with the next rover, will be quite an upgrade from this https://youtu.be/8Asf...

That’s a really interesting apparent connecting trail of material. I wonder what it might look like in a projected time lapse, to get a sense of where it may have begun and where it’s going.

I believe the random motion between the meteors is minor compared to the collision speed between the Earth and the meteor/comet trail. Thats why they seem to travel across the sky like that. Lens distortion like fisheye also affect the image. Does anyone have a suggestion on software for producing a...

Maybe some of the Apollo astronauts had words for that, especially with some uncertainty of returning.

Sometimes the APODs repeat, maybe with updated links.
