Re: APOD: Jupiter by Moonlight (2023 Nov 03)
My assumption is that the image was made near Cortina, Italy (consistent with "northern Italy" and the imager's bio). In which case, the eclipse maximum was at 22:14 on 28 October (local time). At that time, the Moon and Jupiter were 6.19 degrees apart. In the image (taking the angular di...

Re: APOD: Jupiter by Moonlight (2023 Nov 03)
I don't see how. The distance between the Moon and Jupiter is not consistent with the eclipse maximum. So you're saying that the eclipse maximum at her location was at 12:53 AM her time? (How do we know here location?) But that's not what the moon would have looked like then? My assumption is that ...

Re: APOD: Jupiter by Moonlight (2023 Nov 03)
A nice little scene. I am just a touch concerned that the Moon in the image is about 10% too large for the scene over northern Italy (image scale of Jupiter & moons 19.5"/pixel; image scale of the Moon 18.1"/pixel), and also the Moon is rotated about 15 degrees clockwise from its true ...

Re: APOD: Annular Solar Eclipse over Utah (2023 Nov 01)
I'm really disappointed that this one has been selected. It really takes away from what I thought to be the ethos of APOD, great science images (or visaulisations), plus topical and/or brilliant amateur images with educational value. This one is clearly heavily doctored in terms of the Moon being th...

Re: APOD: A Season of Saturn (2023 Aug 25)
Thanks for the kind words everyone, it's an honour to get a second APOD :) @Ann, some very interesting info there - colour can be a thorny challenge in imaging and processing (the rings seem notably yellower in Cassini data than they do in amateur images for example, and clearly was a challenge for ...

Re: Submission: 2018 September
The great planet parade of 2018 Jupiter, Saturn and Mars were all prominent in southern skies this year, each approaching Earth in turn between May and July. This is a collection of one image per month between March and September to show each planet getting larger on approach, then shrinking as it ...

Re: APOD: Mars at Closest Approach 2016 (2016 Aug 09)
Chris Peterson - OK - not the best choice of word there, but these fakes affect the community, how it's perceived and makes it harder for people to appreciate the quality of the true best imagers. Chris Go - I'll be interested to see how that challenge goes, am always likely to learn something new f...

Re: APOD: Mars at Closest Approach 2016 (2016 Aug 09)
Apart from some of the clear examples above that these images are heavily augmented (fake), I have my own evidence to add. avdhoeven's blink of 2007 Mars weather being identical in important respects to that in the video, and the weather allegedly not changing over the 2016 season is ultimate proof ...

An unusual very red supernova in Centaurus A. This week, a supernova was discovered in Centaurus A, triggering a lot of discussion and a series of Astronomers Telegrams about what type it was. It's nearby, in Centaurus A, but partially hidden by the dust that encircles the galaxy. These images were ...
