Re: APOD: Pluto Resolved (2015 Jul 15)

What is the remaining purpose of the the mission? I was reading a web page (somewhere!) that :- A 'deep' sky survey was conducted to find new Kuiper belt objects along NH's continuing path, 5 were found, further analysis (fuel for path correction to visit) narrowed that to 2. Of these 1 is interest...

Re: APOD: The Cliffs of Comet CG (2014 Dec 23)

and it would take about 40 minutes. but how far would 67P have moved during those 40 min ? Doesn't it all depend upon in which direction you jump and how much effort you put in to it ? Could you (a human) ( in the average space suit ) jump "upwards" with enough vigour to reach escape velo...

Re: APOD: The Cliffs of Comet CG (2014 Dec 23)

Every Hollywood effects artist likes to depict celestial bodies with jagged, sharp, spiky landscapes. This is the first time we've actually seen one. No surely not the first time, we have seen plenty, this is classic Bonestell. continuing Ann's theme :) (nice one Ann ! ) Where have we seen them? No...

Re: APOD: Sharpless 308: Star Bubble (2013 Dec 24)

My first thought was - why is the central star not dead-centre(center) ? Then, perhaps the gas bubble is running into (slowing down in) more dense interstellar medium one side cf. the other ??? Ann, very interesting, thank you. I googled violet and got this and this . (And this(**) Some decades ago,...

Re: APOD: Geminid Meteor Shower over Dashanbao... (2013 Dec

FYI, intense Leonid activity occurred in 1998-2002. 2001 and 2002 were the best years for U.S. observers. 2001 and 2002 are good candidates for my poor memory if there were no later outbursts. For me, in europe, the intense activity that I saw, (still lives with me !) was in the early hours (2-4 ut...

200 :?: :?: Gee, outburst of 200. Ummm, hehee, are you and owlice being deliberatly obtuce, or for comic effect, or ,,, ? I said 200? as in a wild card, perhaps I shudav typed 200*, it may have been 2000, 2001, 2002 etc&etc, I had a hope that someone would assist my enfeebled brain and say &quo...

Re: APOD: Geminid Meteor Shower over Dashanbao... (2013 Dec

That was an interesting night, quite unusual for England - a clear sky, moon not too prominent and a good meteor shower all at the same time :) , oh yes, and me awake ! Not many 'ordinary' meteors, probably due to the thin haze, but lots of very bright ones (fireballs?), is this pattern usual for th...
