Re: APOD: Pluto Flyover from New Horizons (2017 Jul 31)
Something puzzles me. With a speed of 1333.3 kilometers a minute, and a Pluto diameter of about 2,400 kilometers, then New Horizons whizzed past Puto's diameter in just under 2 minutes. Why is the video a time lapse, because 2 minutes is the real time? Also, why does the journey begin in the predaw...

Re: APOD: Moon Shadow versus Sun Reflection (2017 Jul 17)
That video is short but sweet! :D Ann And it reveals so much. Plus, doing it all in one take.( It might be a while for take 2 ) I started to think about the relative motion(s) required. The movement of our Moon and observing craft. Why the apparent speed/motion of our Star's reflection is similar t...

Re: APOD: Orbiting Jupiter (2017 Jun 07)
I figure there must be transition zones where Jupiter's atmosphere is compressed into a liquid phase then solid phase below that. If no terrestrial materials are found to be part of Jupiter's make up, what about Metallic Hydrogen as a candidate for a solid surface below all that circulation and turb...

Evidence of non-terrestrial life...? What are the 3 "Cigar Shaped" objects seen in this image ? The upper 2 could be dropouts in data. The lowest seems inclined and crossing more then one scan line.

Most likely hour glass shaped like many planetary nebula. That central ring of??? Stars? Proto-Planets? ...What is that? A future solar system? Rays coming from our star are some of the more interesting things imaged. They appear to converge near the position of Earth. Looks like the Sun should be directly behind Earth and Venus. Wow, good discussion! I too wondered if co-orbital moons could be considered to orbit each other? Many of the ring particles probably orbit about each other. How big does a moon have to be? Maybe Saturn ends up with thousands(millions?) of moons?

Philae picked a nice shady place to rest in peace. Could the Rosetta craft reflect enough light off it's solar panels to wake the lander? It is fun to imagine maneuvering the space craft into an orbit that complex and orient it to track the sun's reflection at Philae. Has a stationary orbit e...
