Re: APOD: The Blue Horsehead Nebula in Infrared (2018 Apr 23)

Took awhile but I think I found the horse head. It's a profile looking to the right. The far right yellowish white object. You can see the lips and it is snorting a red puff out of its nostril. Ears may be pinned back the brownish spot. Just a slight problem the whitish star for the eye should have ...

Re: APOD: Moon in the Hyades (2018 Apr 20)

I don't mind seeing pictures of the Moon when they are sharper then what my usual nearsighted eyes see, and it is nice to see a rare picture of Aldebaran. How many times does Aldebaran appear in APOD photos? Nice to also label Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon Tauri, but what Greek sign is (-)? Theta? Also ...

Re: APOD: M57: The Ring Nebula (2018 Apr 17)

This arouses my curiosity. Why is it that most planetary nebulae are donut shaped. Some perfectly two dimensional with the escaping gas in a donut shape heading to the left and the right, and top and bottom. Yet we always see the hole in the center with the remnant star. Why is it none of the escapi...

Cool pic. Unfortunately I am too tired at this time to get up in the morning to look for myself. When will Mars and Saturn and M22 make a similar appearance in the evening skies? Another question about M22. What is it's actual size in light years? It looks quite compact. Are the stars closer to each...

Yeah, I can see the large dragon. The head and neck of the dragon is the portion on the left to centre top. The bright curved tongue (which looks longer than the neck) is licking up towards a running figure on the right which I believe appears to be a frightened Donald Trump.

Just think. We living in the past 4 or 5 decades are the first humans in all of the past million years to have seen that (in addition to seeing a man walk on the Moon). Not even Albert Einstein could have seen that! (Unless he had eyes with 200/20 Eagle vision.)

Nice looking. It kinda reminded me of the brush strokes of Van Gogh's Starry Night. But then I read that this is not a "post impressionist work of art". It is a photograph with Photoshop paint added on! Kind of makes you more appreciate the brilliance of Van Gogh or Monet, who created thei...

"Look for it [tonight's Full Moon] high in the sky at midnight." Yes, but my question is what time do we look for it when we want to see it near the western sky near the crags of Big Bend National Park? My guess is 6 am?

Re: APOD: Blue Moon Tree (2018 Mar 28)

Nicolas, I disagree. I don't see any shadow by the tree. Seems the focus is on the rock face. The horizon is out of focus, but so is the Moon out of focus. I don't think the Moon is in focus because I can't see any craters. Why is the cliff face lighted up? I don't think it is moonlight. It could be...

@ wondering. Technically the vernal equinox happens today at 11:15 a.m. Chicago time, so the sun wouldn't be setting, but high above around high noon position. If you wanted to see the sun set at equinox you'd have to be east of Chicago, say out in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere. For the most part tho...

Re: APOD: The Crab from Space (2018 Mar 17)

Any idea what causes the apparent asymmetry of the crab? My layman theory is that the Big Bang created equal amounts of matter and anti-matter, but they got separated early on during the expansion, or else they would annihilate each other and there would be nothing in the universe. It could just so...

I doubt it is speed of rotation as Jupiter and Saturn's rotations differ only by half an Earth hour. [Unless new measurements have been taken that I haven't heard about.] My guess could be mass, Jupiter is 3 times more massive than Saturn, and axle tilt, Jupiter is nearly straight up and down to the...

Nice photo. I have a layman question. Apod robot says AE Auriga is the blue star near the centre of the nebula. Yet which one is AE, there are two blue stars which could be judged equally near the centre. (Three actually but I eliminate the third smaller one.) The upper one casts a lot of blue refle...

Actually when that song was playing on the radio regularly in 1969 I thought 'those days' (when the singer was young) wasn't 1969 but the 50s maybe 1960. Because 1969 was the present and known as these days, not those days.

You got me wondering, if Enceladus is a pretty incredible moon, what moon would be antithetic to it. The fairly lethargic moon Callisto maybe? The ugly torpid moon Umbriel? The passé Pasiphae?
