I wonder what the night sky would look like if we were on a planet within the Pac-Man Nebula?

It is such a shame that Chandra will be decommissioned, because the telescope has performed extremely well, has shown no great signs of agi...

I am more amazed by everything else other than the galaxy and the colored lighted meteorite streak. Look at the number of objects in visible light. I'm not seeing any refraction spikes etc, so assuming every single light blob is some galaxy. Yes ? How many ? 1000s.. Seems denser than deep/ultra dee...

But Uranus is missing in the description. How come it is visible?
Probably because it isn't a "bright object". I would guess that the photographer identified it since it was in the neighborhood.

Are the different "rings" shown in this image from successive shedding events when it "evolves to throw off it's outer atmosphere"?

One of the links mentions that the length of totality varies - significantly - at different locations. Why is this? Complex orbital motions or something simpler? In April, totality will last longer than it did in 2017. Seven years ago, the longest period of totality was experienced near Carbondale,...

Re: APOD: Swirling Magnetic Field around Our... (2024 Apr 01)

If this is the accretion disk, wouldn't it be parallel to the galaxy and since we are in the galaxy, wouldn't this view be impossible to see? So then in contrast to what they say, this is not a photo. Am I wrong? The video, that Ann posted, does an excellent job of expelling why we will see the acc...

Here is an image I captured of Jupiter and Venus. You can see three of Jupiter's moons. To get the moons to show I did have to over expose the planets, making them appear larger than they are.

It looks like there are two "volcanos" within the crater. Both close to the rim. One at about 5:30 and the other at about 7:30. Were these the result of the impactor melting ice with in Mimas or other forces?

Thank you, Ann, for your labelled version of this picture ! Without it I was confused. On a PC at least, mousing over the APOD image reveals the annotations. But I think this doesn't work right - or at all - on an iPad, for example. On my iPad, I was able to tap the image to reveal the annotations.

When I zoomed into the rock near the horizon, I noticed a reddish “bubble” on and just above the horizon, near the rock.. Is that lens flare or swamp gas? It appears that the sun is over the astronauts right shoulder and shouldn’t cause a lens flair. Since they were shooting through the lander’s wi...

Beautiful and interesting composition. It reminds me more of a Portuguese man-of-war than fur hooded head. I do have to wonder how they stuffed light year long filaments into a one-third light year wide nebula, though. It looks like the orange filaments extend beyond the outer shell. They show up b...
