I live in this area. We do get some spectacular weather (sunsets, thunderstorms, tornados) but this picture is most impressive. Great shot!!

Ann: Thanks for showing the previous APOD with Rigel in the picture. Also thanks for Witch Head Nebula labels. Seems to me that the more detailed pictures/information we have now makes it difficult to see the shapes folks saw in the past.

The larger APOD image (click on the image a couple of times) is very busy. Lots of light sources with diffraction spikes, galaxies everywhere, lensed (stretched) sources abound.

Does anyone know which part of the earth are we seeing in that sunlit crescent?? Or which side is north? According to info about the picture, it was taken on Dec. 17,1972 23:00 UTC.
