Re: Large meteor, possible meteorite near Chelyabinsk, Russi

http://ura.ru/print/news/1052153519.html Found little nuggets of 30-40 meters from the open water I think this is a particularly bad translation. I think that the original says that the pieces were found 30 -40 metres distance from the open water. Could someone who speaks Russian better than I do cl...

Re: Large meteor, possible meteorite near Chelyabinsk, Russi

There are black little stones found on the ice of Chebarkul lake. There's little chance that they're not part of the meteorite. There are messages, not officially confirmed, that the meteorite was assigned the name of the lake. So, if the officials will confirm this, it's Chebarkul meteorite. Local...

Re: Large meteor, possible meteorite near Chelyabinsk, Russi

As this is now being discussed on two threads, I am cross-posting this link to a post in today's Apod discussion. http://asterisk.apod.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=30743#p193244 where there is a query about the possibility that the meteoroid did not actually impact the surface. I'd certainly be inter...

Re: APOD: The Great Russian Meteor of 2013 (2013 Feb 18)

It is bright, but it is not an explosion. You can see it continues on after its brightest part. It is like a light filament, as it dims, the meteor continues. Did not explode. :---[===] * This is a comment from the blog post ("the meteor's trajectory") linked from today's Apod http://blog...

Re: Happy Birthday to Owlice!

Thanks, MargaritaMc! I spent the day with my son (19-year-old college senior) doing mundane things (eye doctor appointments, a little shopping, eating, driving him from and back to school). We were in our local Target and found mugs on a clearance shelf. For $1, we each got a mug with our first ini...

Sassy had he stitches taken out and is doing real well! She is more playful now that she has been for a while. :D I am so glad that Sassy is doing well, Orin. Spelling mistake in Apod?

Tomorrow's picture: braking news on Russian meteor

From the text of today's Apod
http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

I think that the correct spelling should be 'breaking' - unless a pun of some sort is intended?

Re: Large meteor, possible meteorite near Chelyabinsk, Russi

Sky and Telescope NEWS BLOG by Robert Naeye For those who follow the asteroid impact threat, the 300- to 500-kiloton meteor blast over Russia on February 15th was just a matter of time. It shone brighter than the Sun, and when the shock wave swept across cities and towns more than a minute later, i...

Can we have some terminology explained, please?

A meteoroid broke up in the atmosphere over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on Friday morning http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/9872020/Meteor-falling-over-Russia-caught-on-camera.html The Telegraph calls the Russian object a meteoroid which is a new term for me. Re: Large meteor, possible meteorite near Chelyabinsk, Russi

My Russian is now minimal, but the label of the second of the two YouTube videos posted above by tawilson translates as
"Chelyabinsk 15.02.13 From the Ural (came?) Meteorite 2012DA14"
So one person at least thought it was DA14.

Thank you, Rob. I was almost 100% sure that Pluto didn't go inside the orbit of Uranus - but this image made me doubt my understanding! Of course - the tilt of Pluto's orbit explains it.

Does Pluto's orbit really go inside, not only the orbit of Neptune, but also of Uranus? That is what this image seems to show. I knew about Neptune, of course, but skimming the orbit of Uranus is new to me.

http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/618483main_earth1600_946-710.jpg Wow, a humbling experience that reminds us all, despite the numbers of newly found exo-planets, we are very small and very, very far from anything remotely like our awesome and fragile home . Indeed, and that is something we should...
