I've said my piece, perhaps with too many messages.
I do look forward to APOD pictures, so I had to vote against this one.
Why pick this Matt guy three times and not a dancing poodle or something?

Re: APOD: Happy People Dancing on Planet Earth (2012 Jul 10)

I don't like complaining but I also don't like crap being forced down my throat. I didn't really need to complain about the Valentine's Day observance, but if this really were an intelligent study of dancing across the world, you would have a variety of cultures. You would have actual Flamenco in Se...

Re: APOD: Happy People Dancing on Planet Earth (2012 Jul 10)

I don't like complaining but I really don't see any connection with astronomy. At all. I would also suggest that most dances have more to do with social conformity and genuine feelings are irrelevant. What if you are at a dance and the magical feelings just aren't there? You just pretend or you are ...

The name could be a bit more discrete perhaps. It has rather a large font size and maybe detracts from the æsthetic beauty.

Re: APOD: Gravitational Tractor (2012 Jul 07)

If you use the continuous acceleration of a thruster, could you not attach a more heavy-duty rocket to the rock's surface ... ? What we've learned recently is that many, perhaps all, asteroids are just bunches of rocks and gravel and maybe ice. If you attach anything to pull them, they would come a...

Re: APOD: Gravitational Tractor (2012 Jul 07)

The steady thrust would gradually and predictably alter the course of the tug and asteroid, coupled by their mutual gravitational attraction. What sort of time period would this be? If you use the continuous acceleration of a thruster, could you not attach a more heavy-duty rocket to the rock's sur...

Re: APOD: Gravitational Tractor (2012 Jul 07)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/81/Asteroids-arcadegame.jpg I always imagined that this would be the only reasonable purpose of nuclear warheads. Have them smack into the side of the asteroid at maximum velocity and if you catch it early enough, it wouldn't take much to push it away from...

Re: APOD: The Tidal Tail of NGC 3628 (2012 Jul 06)

I personally wouldn't criticise the volunteers themselves. I would say that although the APOD site does not have the same publicity value of the Moon landings etc., millions of people know about it and visit discretely. Compared with the half-a-billion bucks spent on each space shuttle launch etc., ...

Re: APOD: The Tidal Tail of NGC 3628 (2012 Jul 06)

You do know there are only two people who select images, write the descriptions, find relevant (and sometimes humorous) links, and maintain the whole APOD production and archiving system, yes? And that they have full-time jobs (which is not APOD), families, homes to maintain, etc.? And that APOD co...

In fact what is the latest estimation of the number of smaller bodies, brown dwarfs, that might also be wandering by?

Re: APOD: Milky Way Over Piton de l'Eau (2012 Jun 25)

Why does the central band of the Milky Way typically appear arching? I would think that from Earth it would appear as a flat line since we are looking at the disc straight on. I would suggest that it's because it takes so much of the sky that some sort of fish-eye lens is needed. Otherwise it is pr...

Re: APOD: Apollo 17 at Shorty Crater (2012 Jun 24)

If the Moon landings were a hoax, they were much better than I would expect from the American military. Even 2001 A Space Odyssey from the same year (1969) was less realistic. The only thing that doesn't look right to me is how small the Lunar lander was. With a little puff of flame, it was able to ...
