Re: APOD: Gravitational Tractor (2013 Feb 21)
Why don't we start collecting all the space junk and hold it as a gravitational mass, in a net or something similar, that we could push where we might need it. If we wait for a threat, we won't have enough time to act. Space junk probably won't have enough gravitational pull to divert the threateni...

Re: Weather!
It's snowing hard now! Already 9 inches of snow has fallen on the ground, and it only started snowing four hours ago! About three inches per hour was expected, and it happened! We've also gotten a few flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder. The snow will let up in about an hour, but later in th...

Re: Weather!
The weather radar shows that we may get some snow! Just how much; I don't know! I do not like the cold weather that goes along with snow, but we need the moisture! The predictions range from 3 to 10 inches! 8-) Snow is coming our way, and lots of it!Forecasters predict that Kansas City could see as...

Re: Weather!
We got around three inches of snow, and boy was it windy! By the time the storm ended, I was shoveling ice off my driveway. But it's going to be a frigid ten degrees tomorrow morning.

Re: Weather!
It's snowing! It started at around 3:00 CDT this morning and is predicted to stop at around 9:00. But there's already two inches on the ground, and the conditions are terrible - slick roads, wind gusts of about 50 mph (visibility less than 1/2 mile), and ice in some spots.

Re: Weather!
Hoping for lots of snow, Orin? (I would not like a high of 27°F, but if it's going to be that cold, it should be snowing! That's the only thing that could make that temperature worthwhile in my book!) Just think: Sunday's low temperature is 44 with a high of 33. Monday's low is 19 with a high not e...

Re: Weather!
Flooded houses catch fire in the presence of some kind of accelerant, like natural gas leaking from broken pipes. Ah. I forgot about natural gas. I don't think it even comes close to the devastation of Katrina, at least as far as life, property and breadth of area affected are concerned, unless I l...

Re: Weather!
I showed you guys a tornado that happened in Breezy Point earlier this year. Now their homes are burning/have burned to the ground. http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2012/10/30/sandy-new-york-fire-floods/1668029/ How does a flooded house catch fire? That's somewhat ironic if you ask me. Anyway,...

Re: APOD: Mammatus Clouds Over Saskatchewan (2012 Oct 23)
Another way mammatus cloud formation can occur is by "reverse-direction convection." This happens when convection in these clouds is so strong that it not only develops an overshooting top, but warm air travels to the underside of the anvil creating pockets of warm air, thus producing this...

I should try carving a figure of a praying mantis in a pumpkin for Halloween this year. Oh, if you do that, please post a picture!! Well, I admit I was joking, but I accept the challenge. It'll have to be on a weekend, though, when I have the time. But I will still try and get a picture up here! :w...

Re: Weather!
I don't know just how many times I have come across a praying mantis over the last couple months. For some reason, they're attracted to my house! I've seen them on the front door, along the windows, and a couple somehow got inside. It's not like I have anything against them, it's just that they can ...

Wow!!! The sun looks strikingly red this evening, with a layer of clouds below it, giving it a half-sun appearance. Beautiful! ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

SWEETMad Scientist
Though your chief goals are the somewhat contradictory aims to rule, and then destroy, the planet Earth, you have a strong grasp of the scientific principles of blowing up things (Explodology). Good luck and please have mercy.

Oh well; they updated it. It was supposed to get to 97 today and made 101! They added 4 days over 100 and that Thursday that was supposed to be 91 is now 94; so I'm getting close to your heat! I haven't seen rain for quite a while! I think we got an inch in early June and couple of quickies...
