Re: APOD: Massive Nearby Spiral Galaxy NGC 2841 (2021 Jan 24)

What is the black dot located lower left in the core area? It's not present in other images, and does not seem to be a camera artifact or other processing artifact.

Re: APOD: Close-up of The Great Red Spot (2017 Jul 15)

Indeed, but I did read somewhere that much of the material DOES spiral into Jupiter.

Re: APOD: Close-up of The Great Red Spot (2017 Jul 15)

I've always had the thought that perhaps the color of the GRB and elsewhere in Jupiter's atmosphere was partially due to the millions (billions?) of years of the sulphur and other material constantly spiralling in from Io. Has this ever been considered?

Re: APOD: 3D Ahuna Mons (2016 Mar 19)

Seems to me that the crater next to Ahuna Mons is a collapsed caldera, not an impact crater, as many craters on Ceres seem to be. Perhaps Ahuna Mons is destined for the same fate.

Re: APOD: Pluto Resolved (2015 Jul 15)

I didn't mean Hydra would be a perfect fit......if it were the result of a violent collision then of course Hydra would be smaller than the plain, which it is, and both would have ragged edges. Just a thought.

Re: APOD: Pluto Resolved (2015 Jul 15)

Ok, I know this may be a stretch........but studying the north pole of Charon, the dark area seems to be actually a depression, not a plain, surrounded by shallow angled cliffs. Almost like a golf divot. Initial shape of Hydra would seem to fit in it like a piece from a jigsaw puzzle. And Hydra's ap...

Re: APOD: Pluto Resolved (2015 Jul 15)

Closely studying the latest most detailed image of Charon, it looks like a cracked eggshell with the pieces poorly reassembled. Charon impact with Pluto almost shattered it, gravity pulled it back together?

Re: APOD: The Milky Way from a Malibu Sea Cave (2015 Jul 07)

take closer look. Angle and lighting is different but correlate. What is convincing is the rock formation in the middle front of the cave entrance, plus the floor seems to be covered deeper in sand.

Re: APOD: The Milky Way from a Malibu Sea Cave (2015 Jul 07)

Found a still from the movie "The Usual Suspects" and yes it is the same cave. Taken at a different angle and time of day, and tide is out, but rock formations and formation in front of cave entrance correlate. Plus probably a little erosion the last 20 years.

Re: APOD: An Unusual Mountain on Asteroid Ceres (2015 Jun 30

Not sure about the mountain, could be a water volcano. However I did seem to notice that there seems to be flow aprons emanating from the large group of bright spots in the one large crater. Could some of the larger craters actually be volcanic water calderas?

Chris Peterson, perhaps. But it would be interesting to see that Pluto has been broken up by impact and it's 5 moons can be refitted to the main body like a jigsaw puzzle. We shall see.

Chris Peterson, perhaps. Unless Pluto suffered a major collision which broke it up and created it's 5 moons. Would be interesting to see that Pluto HAS been broken up and it's moons can be fitted back to the main body like a jigsaw puzzle. We shall see.

Re: APOD: Approaching Pluto (2015 May 27)

Everyone keeps saying that the contrast differences and low resolution cause Pluto to have a lumpy appearance, but I tend to disagree. The more I study the newest pictures the more obvious to me that Pluto has a large chunk missing. Of course, I could be wrong, and the next few weeks will tell the t...

Had the Huygens lander landed in one of these seas, what would have been the outcome? Would it have immediately sank, or would it have floated at least long enough to be able to take some measurements and images?

Re: APOD: Eta Carinae and the Expanding Nebula... (2014 Dec

What is Eta Carinae's proper motion in relation to Sol? If it is moving away at a relatively high speed from us then in a few million years when it goes supernova it may be on the other side of the galaxy and not visible to Earth.

Re: APOD: Unusual Hollows Discovered on Planet... (2012 Mar

As with the other locations of the "hollows" there are hollows that do not have the blue tint or indication of spraying material around them. Are these older hollows and the brighter ones are recent? What has the spectroscopic analysis been of these features?

WOW, i didnt think it possible to get such a detailed photo of Io from a ground based scope. You can even make out a volcanoe! (a dark spot on the right) Have they ever tried to "mask" Io in an attempt to make out a eruption plume?
