For Rob: a toroidally-frosted picnic table (which was empty earlier that morning) P1030892.JPG For Owlice: I did indeed try to bike around in the foot of fresh snow - it's such a beautiful feeling to float through snow on a bike (once you've gotten going) and everything is so clean and pure. Re: APOD: Opportunity at Santa Maria Crater (2011 Jan 29)
Did anyone notice what looks like a path on the ground which also leads to what looks like a side impact on the far side of the crater? The path starts at the sundial on Opportunity, runs straight up the image and ends at the dark splotch on the crater side. Easily seen in the full size image. I su...

But Sam, there aren't really any objects to mark our local 'landmarks' - that pic has dots Photoshopped on it. When you think about it, on this scale an earring would reach halfway to Sirius, nearly nine light years away! A small yellow crystal earring shows the position of our Earth and Sun, thoug...

Re: UTexas: Heaviest Known Black Hole in Our Cosmic Neighbor
...The black hole in M87 is displaced from the galaxy center by a distance of about 25 pc. The displacement is in the opposite direction from the one-sided jet, which may indicate that the black hole has been accelerated away from the center by the jet. Re: APOD: M81 and Arp s Loop (2010 Dec 09)
Here's what's always confused me about galaxy photographs. Since we're not viewing M81 flat-on, the light from the back of the galaxy is from an entirely different time as the light from the front. So why does it still look so symmetrical in its spiral? Shouldn't it be all bunched up and weird, ref...

There are definitely real lights visible in the ocean areas of this image. And real stars, too!
