Re: APOD: New Data: Ultima Thule Surprisingly Flat (2019 Feb 11)
If the spin axis is as shown, could this be not two objects coming together but one that is spinning apart? John they should have two objects spinning *already in sinc* in such a way (opposite each other?) that when they did collide (at the almost same rotational speed?), they haven't destroyed eac...

Re: APOD: New Data: Ultima Thule Surprisingly Flat (2019 Feb 11)
It's incredible what's out there... I wonder if in a computer simulation, this result can be obtained in any way... Talking of things that happen in the universe, have complete different meaning... At first I thought: the passage of New Horizon was SO IN SINC with Ultimathule so we've seen the faces...

Re: APOD: Venus Unveiled (2019 Feb 10)
Hi Ann, you quoted from Wiki: "the lack of evidence for plate tectonics on Venus, possibly because its crust is too strong to subduct without water to make it less viscous." can we *really* suppose that the oceans can "softer" the Earth's crust so it can subduct ? Oceans on Earth...

Re: APOD: Venus Unveiled (2019 Feb 10)
Hi,
do Venus has surface activity? I think to Vulcan, lava flows and maybe even tectonic movements?
I think, because it's similar in size to earth, that it should have some activity of this kind...
If no...WHY do Earth has such activity? What's the difference from our planet and Venus & Mars?

Re: APOD: The Long Gas Tail of Spiral Galaxy D100 (2019 Jan 28)
To me it looks like a jet, being violently ejected by energetic processes in the galaxy's core. Apparently that is not the case. The explanation in the caption is good enough. APOD Robot wrote: The red path connects to the center of D100 because the outer gas, gravitationally held less strongly, ha...

Hi JohnD, My point was on the thing to use the temperature shown as "height", non to the shortness of the video; which I agree with you. For me, "colder" won't mean necessarily "higher" using the common sense. That's why I think altimeter data would have had more meanin...

Sincerely I cannot quite understand the purpose of this little video. Sure, the presentation is really dramatic, only thinking at the size of the features can be seen. But I disagree to see the temperature differences as height and show them as "mountains". Maybe altimeter data (dunno if i...

Trying to "read" what this image shows to my eyes, I can see the "lightsaber" that can be explained by the in falling matter into the protostar. Also the funnel-shaped "cloud" of dust that "rains" into the obscured dust, seems reasonable. I cannot explain, ins...

The sky portion of the image is beautiful, but I had the same issue with the star reflections in the water. There is nothing in the water that appears to correspond to the star patterns in the sky, star brightness notwithstanding. What am I missing about the principle of reflection? Maybe the "...

Do someone noticed that the reflected lights, of the sky, which appear in the water (even thou a bit blurred), did not correspond to any part of the sky ?
Why?
Maybe photo-editing?

It's striking & surprising how in 1969, in the movie: 2001 a Space Odissey
in the well known final slitscan scene, Kubrick reproduced this scene in *real time* at the end of he's wonderful movie!!!
have a look at the two attached images... astonishing!!!

When I see images of these so-called planetary nebulas, I have many questions on what we are seeing trough the images, the interpretation we can give and what's happening in reality. I think, since nobody ever witnessed an exploding star, having enough documentation, i.e. time lapse imaging... how c...

Each time i see this image, I wonder the visual-meaning of the ripples and the stone-in-the-pond effect we see into the movie. I refer to the "waves" we see in the gas around the pulsar... I sometimes explained it to myself (as a rookie) like "waves of density" of the expanding g...
